HDD Crashed, So Now What? (PC NERDS COME HERE) - John Scarce - Aug 9, 2016 My HDD is so fucked up. Long story short, it started clicking and shit. My PC would get blue screen'd every 5 minutes. It was fucked up, at times it would not let me copy/paste/move/read. I opened up my PC and I attempted to fix the hard drive myself but instead the screwdriver slipped off the hole and I basically smashed that grey disc that you're not supposed to touch, it has a dent. I don't want to buy a whole new PC, is it possible to get a used HDD or some shit like that off eBay and just pop it in? What would I have to do to get Windows back on and all that? Someone smart advise me. * - Layla - Aug 9, 2016 Just buy a new hard drive and install windows on it. * - B4ROT - Aug 9, 2016 You're joking right? Buy a new HDD, put it in your PC, and install windows? You just won't have all your old files. * - John Scarce - Aug 9, 2016 How hard is it to install windows? Also, will any HDD fit, cause I'm thinking of buying an SSD instead. * - Layla - Aug 9, 2016 (Aug 9, 2016 10:20 PM)DeandreJ Wrote: How hard is it to install windows? Downloading Windows is literally putting a usb/cd into the drive and booting from it. * - John Scarce - Aug 9, 2016 (Aug 9, 2016 10:23 PM)Adam♥ Wrote: SSD's are generally smaller so you should be fine. I'm actually a dumbass sorry, so will I have to buy Windows again? Booting from it, then what do I do so that next time I don't need the USB? * - Layla - Aug 9, 2016 (Aug 9, 2016 10:24 PM)DeandreJ Wrote: I'm actually a dumbass sorry, so will I have to buy Windows again? Unless you kept a copy of your activation code you'll need to buy a new one. :/ Running the installation on the cd or usb would install the operating system onto one of your hard drives or solid state drives. After the first install you do not need to keep the usb or cd in the computer. * - John Scarce - Aug 9, 2016 (Aug 9, 2016 10:27 PM)Adam♥ Wrote: Unless you kept a copy of your activation code you'll need to buy a new one. :/ Ok, so about Windows itself. My copy of the activation code... say I just bought a PC that came with it... what's the best solution? * - Layla - Aug 9, 2016 (Aug 9, 2016 10:28 PM)DeandreJ Wrote: Ok, so about Windows itself. Buy a new copy of windows off www.g2a.com I'm pretty sure it's like 30 dollars or something for a copy. * - John Scarce - Aug 9, 2016 (Aug 9, 2016 10:31 PM)Adam♥ Wrote: Buy a new copy of windows off www.g2a.com How can I be sure those are not MSDN codes though? * - Layla - Aug 9, 2016 (Aug 9, 2016 10:33 PM)DeandreJ Wrote: How can I be sure those are not MSDN codes though? Sorry i'm stoned please ask someone else right now. I don't want to fuck up your computer. * - Supreme - Aug 9, 2016 You can install an SSD, but keep in mind that it's more expensive than a HDD for the same space. There are loads of tutorials on how to install Windows. You just have to Google it. As for the Windows copy itself, you can either buy a new code or obtain it illegally. However, don't go asking around HF for keys as it's not allowed here. * - John Scarce - Aug 9, 2016 (Aug 9, 2016 11:30 PM)Supreme Wrote: You can install an SSD, but keep in mind that it's more expensive than a HDD for the same space. Thanks for the help! Appreciate it guys I'll hit you w/ reps soon. Last last question: If I buy Windows 7 or 8, is there any way to upgrade to windows 10 for free right after I buy it? * - Supreme - Aug 9, 2016 (Aug 9, 2016 11:40 PM)DeandreJ Wrote: Thanks for the help! Windows will sometimes show a message in the Action Center for a Win10 upgrade at no cost. Not sure if it's available right away when you first login to Win7/8 for the first time though. * - kh3ir0n - Aug 10, 2016 Windows 10 upgrade was free until las July 29th, right now it's only available for purchase, look |
