College Laptop for 800? - Flared - Aug 13, 2016 Just need something very simple, don't need to play games or anything like that ofc, just for taking to class and homework such. Need's a decently sized hard drive. Don't force yourself to get to the 800$ budget also, any extra money I can put towards something else is good Edit: J realized this was in the mac section, Im open to any kind of laptop really it doesn't have to be macbook. If staff see's please move to the computer and hardware section please and thank you * - Dismal. - Aug 14, 2016 If you're not gaming, why spend so much? https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-Thinkpad-2344BPU-802-11agn-Fingerprint/dp/B00A9G1RE8 https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-ThinkPad-T430s-23539WU-Notebook/dp/B009UESY2I The T430 comes standard with an SSD and can be upgraded to a 4 core i7 (with the same power draw) with a little know how. I believe it can hold up to 16GB of ram also. The graphics have much to be desired, but it has a fucking CD drive! (Who cares) Just my 2 cents. * - EliteTM - Aug 14, 2016 Have you considered getting a Chromebook? Yes, they aren't the greatest, but they are cheap and (I believe all Chromebooks) come with a year or two of free cloud storage. I'm assuming your campus is entirely covered in WiFi, the Chromebook just needs a internet connection to the cloud. The benefit of this is, instead of trying to buy a computer to last you X amount of years, you can just buy a new Chromebook every year and re-purpose the old Chromebooks into many small projects. Hoped this helped. * - Bαker - Aug 14, 2016 Go with a Mac Book air that would be a good computer for school * - TheChosenOunce - Aug 14, 2016 (Aug 14, 2016 08:08 PM)Dismal. OP if you really don't care about anything BUT school why not just head over to your local Walmart and buy their 300$ special. * - antmatt - Aug 14, 2016 I would get the lenovo G50-80 its got some quirks but it does me well for non gaming purposes $400 or less i think cd drive, 1tb hdd, i3 and 4gb ram (has an extra slot [upgradable]) i3 is great for this windows 10, but you can have multiple os's bc of the boat of a hdd (i have 3 os's lol) webcam dolby speakers Cons- Sketchy plastic build mousepad acts goofy as fuck sometimes (i might have a defect) speakers sometimes hum when too loud odd keyboard to get used to, tiny backspace and shift key, they annoy the fuck out of me, horrible design but nothing bad once used to. * - Dismal. - Aug 15, 2016 (Aug 14, 2016 09:11 PM)Justin Trudeau Wrote: Ugly ass laptop lol. Yeah it doesn't look much like your pretty pink one does it.🤦♂ * - Long Morrison - Aug 15, 2016 I vouch for thinkpads, my x201 has been almost too good to be true. Didn't even need big ssd when i can save everything to cloud with 3g. * - Flared - Aug 15, 2016 (Aug 14, 2016 09:11 PM)Justin Trudeau Wrote: Ugly ass laptop lol. Want something that can last. I'd rather pay 800 for something thatll last 5 years, rather than a 300$ one thatll last one year * - Dismal. - Aug 15, 2016 The rate at which technological advancement is increasing is exponential.. Any computer you buy will be outdated and "Old" in two years. As for lasting, thinkpads will continue to boot until your kids go to college. * - Security Researcher - Aug 15, 2016 You can get a decent Thinkpad x220 or x230 for $200-$350 -- which is more than sufficient for note taking in class. If you're doing design, look for one with an IPS panel. * - Shoe - Aug 15, 2016 (Aug 14, 2016 08:08 PM)Dismal. While I wouldn't game on a laptop, my requirements are similar. A decent amount of RAM, a viable GPU because my current laptop's integrated graphics are shit, an i5 or an i7, and a decent keyboard. * - Dismal. - Aug 16, 2016 (Aug 15, 2016 08:01 PM)Shoe Wrote: For example, network security requires a fairly beefy machine. In what world do you live in? 🤭 Network security is a walk in the park compared to video editing, illustration, gaming, 3D work, rendering... Are you networking or mining for BTC? I'd learn what you actually need before dumping money on something you don't. Why not spend that extra $300 on some memory foam so you can get a good nights rest at school? Or be like 90% of other college kids and buy drugs. Cheers. 👍 * - Flared - Aug 16, 2016 I got a macbook air lol love it so far fuk it |
