Skylake or fifth gen i5? - KAPPAP - Sep 1, 2016

So I need to upgrade my PC because I have a crappy AMD CPU.

I was thinking of upgrading to Skylake and going with an i5 6500 because I found cheap deal, however watching some videos and especially the Battlefield 1 beta I see that the i5 6500 can be a bottleneck, even for a GTX 1060. I thought I would go with the i5 6600k but then remembered you need a Z170 mobo to be able to overclock it, and the K models don't come with a cooler so I gotta buy that shit too, basically the price skyrockets.

So I thought what if I go with a 5gen i5? can those be overclocked on any cheap motherboard? that way I can also use my DDR3 RAM I already have so I don't have buy DDR4 RAM and instead get a CPU cooler with the money.

The i5-4690k can be overclocked with a Z97 motherboard.

That said the cooling mounts for Haswell/Devils Canyon and Skylake are all the same so you could get a stock haswell cooler and use it at stock clock speeds while you save the money for a better cooler to overclock the Skylake i5 and still get the DDR4 ram.

Stock 1150/1151 coolers are a dime a dozen so really a good option to get you started.

Just a thought.

5th gen i5/7s need a Z97 board to use. You can't use a cheap board for them.
I would say 5th gen aren't worth it unless you care about strong iGPU, which is probably unlikely if you have a dGPU.

Damn alright. What about a 4gen i5? Do all intel CPU's need a higher end mobo to overclock?

I mean I personally wouldn't get a 4th gen i5 when 6th gen is out. No sense in not getting it.
As for overclocking, you need a Z series board.

The 5th gen isn't worth it in my opinion and should be disregarded for desktop builds. There's no reason why you'd want to have a i5 5675, go with something like the i5 6600k or the i5 4690K, the latter only if you really must because whatever reason.

Wow I would like to clarify, I messed up above, I stated 5th gen as Haswell, technically Broadwell is 5th gen.
