C# Advantages over Visual Basic - Mаestro - Sep 21, 2016 I've done a lot of work in VB.net and I'm learning C# in college. Since they both get compiled into IL the speed is similar if not basically the same from what I understand, I've heard that VB.net is mostly used for legacy applications compared to todays work in C#. Is there anyone that can shed some light on this topic for me? * - jujuger - Sep 21, 2016 VB is looked down upon since it is not a derivative of the "C" languages, thus, few people use it, and therefore, few jobs. * - Zilog80 - Sep 21, 2016 (Sep 21, 2016 01:12 PM)jujuger Wrote: VB is looked down upon since it is not a derivative of the "C" languages, thus, few people use it, and therefore, few jobs. Thats why python is so popular, because python syntax is similar to "C" languages...Oh wait... 🤣 * - xvis - Sep 21, 2016 VB.NET can be used to make GUI's (pronounced gooey) to track IP addresses. This is often used in crime solving. * - oduslabs - Sep 21, 2016 (Sep 21, 2016 01:10 PM)Mayuri Kurotsuchi Wrote: I've heard that VB.net is mostly used for legacy applications You're thinking of VB6, totally different to VB.NET. Here's a comparison though: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_C_Sharp_and_Visual_Basic_.NET * - GuRuHaX - Sep 21, 2016 Well OP you just asked a question that will make some noise 😝 🤝 * - Ninja - Sep 21, 2016 C# allows for unmanaged code I heard. Not sure what it means really. The syntax is similar to other languages such as C, C++, Java, PHP even, etc. * - jujuger - Sep 21, 2016 (Sep 21, 2016 03:14 PM)Ninja Wrote: C# allows for unmanaged code I heard. Not sure what it means really. You have 3 years experience and you don't know what managed code is? Basically anything that needs .NET or some kind of interpreter is managed. While things like C++ and C are unmanaged. http://www.c-sharpcorner.com/uploadfile/puranindia/managed-code-and-unmanaged-code-in-net/ Learn from here mate * - GuRuHaX - Sep 21, 2016 (Sep 21, 2016 03:36 PM)jujuger Wrote: You have 3 years experience and you don't know what managed code is? You can debug unmanaged code in VS : https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/tdw0c6sf(v=vs.100).aspx 🤝 * - DisguiserNET - Sep 21, 2016 (Sep 21, 2016 01:43 PM)xvis Wrote: VB.NET can be used to make GUI's (pronounced gooey) to track IP addresses. Not sure what it means really.c# allows unsafe code, which means you can use pointers. and the language is similar to c, c++ and java. wouldn't compare it to php tho. but in the end both are compiled down to msil, so it's more or less a question about the syntax and learning c# makes it easier to adapt others. * - xvis - Sep 21, 2016 (Sep 21, 2016 04:32 PM)DisguiserNET Wrote: not sure if kidding or naah Kidding, of course. I'd like to add that the job market leans towards C#, not sure why but its probably to do with it being similar to other languages and it attracts more experienced developers (?). If it is just for a hobby then it doesn't really matter. You might want to do some research on libraries though as there is a few that doesn't support VB like Xamarin, which is popular for developing mobile apps (I think just Android). * - Ninja - Sep 21, 2016 (Sep 21, 2016 04:32 PM)DisguiserNET Wrote: not sure if kidding or naah Ah unsafe that was it. * - jujuger - Sep 21, 2016 (Sep 21, 2016 04:32 PM)DisguiserNET Wrote: not sure if kidding or naah Yeah, but unsafe code allows for more than just pointers, if I remember correctly it also turns off the .NET memory checking and stuff. Allowing stuff like memory overflows. Low level memory management. * - StayTech666 - Sep 21, 2016 Quote:There are almost no performance issues between Visual Basic .NET and Visual C# .NET. Visual C# .NET may have a few more "power" features such as handling unmanaged code, and Visual Basic .NET may be skewed a little toward ease of use by providing features such as late binding. However, the differences between Visual Basic .NET and Visual C# .NET are very small compared to what they were in earlier versions.
