It actually did work at one point. Even Major Nelson wrote about it saying the people who did use it wont be banned for it.

They used it and redeemed it fine. But gold was never put on acc.
But since that code went sort of viral (Reddit , facebook and other forums) many were scared they would get banned. Gold goes on acc. But you don't get gold. Code was glitched. I guess a lot reported as they thought they will get banned. But Major Nelson explained that nothing will
