Computer very laggy (not infected) - Admiral Kitteh - Jan 14, 2017

Hi, dont know id this is in the right section or not.

So my computer got very laggy lately. Opened task manager to see what was hammering my cpu/ram. I then noticed that dwm.exe (desktop window manager) was using most of my cpu. it used 1/8 cores at 70-90%.
I have had some malware before this so i thought it would be the cause and i hadn't quite removed it yet. Did a lot of research on this and found nothing. Only solution was to use the windows 7 basic theme.
so yesterday i decided i would do a clean install of windows 7 again.
After the install and all the updates and drivers and so on, i booted it up again, and after about an hour it was lagging again.
After a clean install? how? Why is this happening and how to fix this?

I'm not expert, but assuming the disk was genuine and it is still occurring after a fresh installation then perhaps it could be part of your computer's hardware?

task manager is useless get process explorer
then you can look to see if DWM has any services running

I haven't used windows in a while now kinda forgot how process explorer works
right click the process then click properties and then go to threads
and this should list the services and or DLL's

sometimes there is a service which consumes a lot of cpu
or a DLL attached to that process could be causing an issue too
could be the GPU driver causing issues
dunno it's hard to tell when I don't have access to the PC

What are your specs? Dwm usually takes a bit of usage your hw may just be outdated.
