Japanese Firm Considering Three-Day Weekend
Japan has recently started pressuring companies into abandoning the practice of having employees work long hours. After a female employee committed suicide from working more than 100 hours of overtime at Mitsubishi Electric Corp in a month, prosecutors began reviewing the company to see if many of its employees have fallen victim to overworking. In response to the criticism, Mitsubishi says it will “deal sincerely with the matter.” A spokesman for Japan’s labor ministry said the ministry will continue to take a firm stance against long work hours. In addition, this coming February, the government of Japan and some Japanese business groups will launch a “Premium Friday” campaign which encourages companies to let their workers leave early on the last Friday of every month. >>Source

Russia Considers ban of Cigarette Sales to Anyone Born After 2015
Plans were recently unveiled by the Russian health ministry to ban the sale of cigarettes to anyone born after 2015. If this plan is to go through, it will make Russia the first country to have such a stringent anti-tobacco stance. Nikolai Gerasimenko, a member of the Russian parliament’s health committee, believes the move is “ideologically correct.” Even with the concerns that it could lead to a black market for cigarettes, the policy is being considered. The most recent report shows that 31% of the Russian population smokes. >>Source

El Salvador has one day Without Homicide
El Salvador is considered one of the deadliest countries in the world. Since January of 2015, a homicide has been recorded in the country every day. However, according to the national civil police commissioner, no murders were reported on January 10, 2017. Killings peaked in the gang-plagued country at 104 per 100,000 residents in 2015, which was the highest rate for any country not in open war at the time. Homicide rates declined by 20% in 2016, but the country is still considered one of the most violent countries in the world at 81.2 murders per 100,000 residents. >>Source

U.S. Army to Develop Biodegradable Bullets
When many of us think pollution or litter, we usually think of things such as candy wrappers, trash, or even landfills harming the environment. An overlooked contributor to environmental pollution and litter, is the enormous amount of bullets used by the U.S. Army and other armies, especially in training zones. While these would both be difficult and costly to effectively clean up, the U.S. Army thinks they have what may be a good solution - make the bullets biodegradable. The U.S. Army has requested proposals to contractors for a plan for the bullet, and the contractor who they pick will develop the bullet. The bullets will range from 40 millimeters to 120 millimeters in size, the latter which is used in tanks. They will not only be biodegradable, but will also germinate the soil after months of being in the ground, essentially replacing the shell with a plant. The U.S. Army will choose a contractor to begin the project on February 8.

Razer's Triple Monitor Laptop Prototypes Stolen From CES
At a convention as enormous and well known as the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, you would think manufacturer security would be almost spotless, considering the cost and importance of the items show at the event. This security has be put into question this week, after gaming-oriented tech manufacturer Razer had both of their prototypes for a never before seen laptop design. The laptops in question were gaming laptops featuring three 4K monitors each, something that has not yet been seen in portable gaming. "It is cheating, and cheating doesn't sit well with us. Anyone who would do this clearly isn't very smart," said Razer's CEO Ming-Liang Tan. Razer is offering $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of any connected to the crime.

Chrysler Caught Cheating Emissions Tests
Following in the footsteps of Volkswagen, the EPA has discovered that much like Volkswagen did last year, Chrysler has cheated their emissions tests, breaking the Clean Air Act. The EPA insists the Chrysler allegedly changed emissions data on some of its diesel vehicles, specifically the 2014-2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Dodge Ram diesel trucks, to pass emissions requirements. Unlike German manufacturer Volkswagen, Chrysler's emissions cheating is on a much smaller scale, with the EPA estimating that around 100,000 vehicles cheated the emissions tests. Chrysler, formerly known as Fiat-Chrysler of America, is claiming that they have not cheated the tests, despite what appears to be solid evidence. If the claim is true, Chrysler will most likely be hit with a variety of class-action lawsuits.

Hacker Claims They are Able to Get Private Phone Numbers from Facebook
While it's been known that it's possible to get a phone number off of Facebook when someone doesn't lock down security, a security researcher claims there is a way to get numbers that aren't set to public. When reported to Facebook, Facebook saw it as a feature--not a flaw. They directed him to their documentation about security settings. He warns that he'll go public with the exploit if Facebook doesn't fix the problem. >>Source

New Gmail Phishing Page is Very Convincing
Seriously, don't fall for it. --- A new Gmail phishing scam is so convincing and effective that even the tech-savvy can be tricked into giving hackers their Google Account credentials. The attackers compromise a Gmail account, and then start going through the inbox to launch a secondary attack to pass it on. They use previous attachments sent to contacts, screenshot it, and include it in a reply to the target. The attachment is disguised as a PDF with the thumbnail of the attachment. When clicked, the target is directed to a phishing page disguised as a Google sign-in page. It even contains the accounts.google.com subdomain, which is enough to fool majority of people. >>Source

Trump Appoints Cyber Security Adviser Whose Website is Poorly Secured
Donald Trump nominated New York City's former mayor, Rodolph W. Giuliani, as an adviser on cyber security. Giuliani is the CEO of security consulting firm Giuliani Partners. Ironically, the firm's website is very insecure--not only does it run an outdated version of Joomla (an open-source CMS), but the server runs a 10-year-old version of FreeBSD. However, as drama over this rises, Security Researcher Robert Graham said that Giuliani didn't build the site himself and, "there's nothing on Giuliani's server worth hacking...all this tells us is that Verio/NTT.net is a crappy hosting provider, not that Giuliani has done anything wrong." >>Source
