Local delivery service business idea - Proposed - Feb 14, 2017

*This is a remake of a thread I posted in the Business section but as that section is relatively slow I decided to get a better range of people.

Hello,

I'm coming to this section of the monetizing board to get some constructive criticism as well as hear some ideas to better help me mold my business plan. The simple idea I have is to provide a delivery service locally for a plethora of different items. The plan is to design a business where people would either call/text my number, discuss what they need delivered, and deliver that specific item/items in a quick and prompt manner.

Lets throw out an example. You're sitting at your house or place of business and you want food delivered. You know most fast food joints do not deliver such as major restaurant chains and even local restaurants. You call up "Presto Delivery" and place your order. I go pick up your order and deliver it to you.

Or another example. You and/or your business need certain supplies that you do not want to waste the time going to get. You call "Presto Deliver" and I retrieve them for you.

I have been pondering this idea and would like to get it rolling around May 2017.

Some examples of goods to delivered:
  • Groceries
  • Food
  • Supplies IE. Nails, Wood, Car parts, Paper, Printer Ink, Etc.
  • Alcohol *Depends on my city/states regulations
  • Emergency Supplies IE. Medical Supplies, Gas, Oil, Etc.

I've also been throwing around how to monetize this business.
Some ideas include:
  • 10-20% Fee
  • Charge extra for extended miles.
  • Tips
  • Advertisement spots on Delivery Vehicle

I would start out with general business hours. M-F 8:00Am to 5:00Pm. I would eventually like to extend this service to 8:00Am to 2:00Am once I would be able to hire another worker to provide services to late night goers. (People that party or drink on the weekends or nights would love to get late night fast food delivered or even some Perkins!)

I know I would need to run some type of payment gateway. I was thinking something like squareup or amazon pay. Eventually I would like to make everything automated using an App.

I know of services in different states that I have been looking through but I know that as of now there really isn't any competition in the surrounding area.

I would really appreciate some expansion help with my idea as well as constructive criticism. Any and all help would be appreciated! Thank you!👍

Think of it as reverse uber.

It isn't a new idea. There are a few around the United States. I will most likely call businesses similar in other states to get some information from them but I figured I would enjoy some input from hackforums.

One question I have is how much is to much for delivery of food for everyone. IE. You want late night Taco Bell and don't want to drive. I charge say 20% fee for delivery. Your 15$ Taco Bell order is now $18. You have the option to tip or not. Would you not tip because it's to expensive or would you tip?

Exactly but there isn't one in my city. So I figured if I capitalize early I can get the jump locally.

Well then i say you should jump on it. Work your business up using referrals. You'll attract higher tipping customers, that way your drivers stay happy and their hours satisfied.

I lived with the manager of one of these startups and also worked with him for a while. So all this was more or less explained to me. :)

Could you explain to me your common fees or charges to your customers? Also, maybe an average daily take?

So a basic receipt would look like this:

-------------- -------------------------
Your Delivery Service
1111 delivery dr
Pizza planet

Miles: 2.7 (.50/mi) varies based on where you're at
Just your average mcdonals: $20
Delivery base: $3.00
Mileage to the driver: $1.35
Tip: $5.00

Total: $29.35

Thanks for using Your Delivery Service

------------------

And as for an average daily take, do you mean as a driver or as the business?

I remember a while back someone did this with exclusively McDonalds orders in the regio of Rotterdam (Netherlands). It got shut down pretty quickly because McDonalds filed a complaint.

thank hater later!

There's about 10 places in my area that do this at an absurdly low price. If there is no one in your area then go for it.

A lot of businesses do this. Not worth the investment because I'm sure you won't make it back. Look for another niche.
