Coming into this anime I had a general expectation for some cyberpunk dystopia with a straightforward plot, yet this did not prepare me for the mindfuck that ensued.

Ergo Proxy I would consider to be one of the more intricate and unorthodox anime to have sprung within the past decade or so. However, given that many of the staff were involved with projects such as Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, and Gangsta, this is not surprising that the anime bloomed in this manner. This is one of the few anime whereby you either enjoyed its thought process and the constant questioning of the direction or you hated it from the sheer force of irritation from a non-linear story line.

Indeed, after completing this anime I found myself seeing great similarities akin to Neon Genesis Evangelion (without the mechas). Religious symbolism, a somewhat consistent plot till just after the halfway point, psychological and philosophical anthropology to name a few. However, unlike NGE, Ergo Proxy manages to solve its questionable plot after each headache of an episode. The unconventionality of the anime allows it to use the medium to explore more the human condition through more than just in a dystopian wasteland with occasional comedy, slice-of-life, drama, and other out of place genres one would not expect to encounter. What would generally be seen as unnecessary to the plot becomes the opposite upon one fully completes the anime. However I believe I have gone on a tangent long enough and should wrap up this "short review" so to speak. ;)

The animation I found to be done well. I did not a few times where the characters vocal animation seemed to be not present, however this did not detract from the overall quality. The sound was one of the strong points for this anime; I especially became fond of the OP from eps 3-23. The characters themselves mutually progress the plot while also being the experiment of the plot itself as the devices to explore the concepts being presented within each episode of the series.

Overall, while I would recommend giving this anime a watch a few times over to gain an understanding, it was generally a decent watch and I recommend to you all to watch it if given the chance.
