NTP DDOS - 1337anon - Apr 9, 2017

I was using zmap on port 123 to search for NTP servers but it uses all my upload speed to do so (15mbps), and it takes way too long when I make it use less. Is there any free VPS I could use to port scan on? I was using kali linux in a virtual machine. I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to this.

Is using Zmap illegal?

Dude what. You're scanning the internet on your home internet? Fork over the money for a decent VPS but be warned you will be suspended very quickly. Check out my thread for hosts to blacklist to decrease your suspension chance: More IP ranges to avoid scanning

I'd suggest starting with some smaller projects before you dive into this shit

Could you not scan open port 123 for educative purposes? Is Internet scanning, illegal in general, or only for certain ports? What about 80, 443, 53, 22?

ISPs don't like you scanning on your home network.
If you have done any amount of scanning, you can probably expect a warning message coming from your ISP saying basically "Stop doing that shit or we are dropping your service and reporting you to feds"

I think we should be more concerned that he is scanning from a home connection lmao.

OP, port scanning a single IP won't raise much attention and they don't really care. When you scan the entire IPv4 range on 1 port, then they give a fuck. They WILL suspend your internet connection and forward details to law enforcement. This is a terrible idea and you need to be really careful. A 15mbps home connection will take years to complete a zmap scan so you really need to get a VPS for this stuff.
