Why I liked, but absolutely hated the new TV show '13 reasons why'. - Juicy - Apr 13, 2017 First off, I would like the say that the show was beautifully made and an awesome watch. I was hooked from the beginning and still consider the show to be an awesome one. For anyone who hasn't seen it, you need to watch it and you'll see why. Now, for the other part of the title. '13 Reasons Why' very clearly romanticizes the idea of suicide and depression. The show is made to connect you to the plot very strongly. For those who are not suicidal or have depression, you're hooked and you love it. For those who do struggle with depression, the show is romanticizing the idea of suicide with the idea that everyone who ever did you wrong will suffer if you do decide to kill your self. In this country we have already had a problem with the depressed kids considering suicide 'beautiful' or whatever, but this is only making it worse. Since the show came out, one of my friends has had two friends from her hometown kill themselves. Obviously I cannot directly link it but it seems like weird timing. Yes the show is great, awesome watch, but it shows the girl "Hannah" essentially gets payback on whoever did her wrong, and they all regretted it, which I feel is one of the reasons people do kill themselves. * - SDS143 - Apr 13, 2017 Last few scenes upset me. I didn't watch the entire thing, I was just Skyping with one of my friends when he was watching the last episode and he shared his screen. * - Mr. Robot - Apr 13, 2017 A real shame when people are uneducated about shows and their writers. Go check out Next to Normal - it's a lot worse. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Next_to_Normal Same author. * - Copywriter - Apr 13, 2017 Ending sorta sucked dick tbh. Rip Alex. Oh yeah and the scene where Hannah cuts herself, damn it was deep. I felt bad for her... poor Hannah. * - Juicy - Apr 13, 2017 (Apr 13, 2017 10:07 AM)Mr. Robot Wrote: A real shame when people are uneducated about shows and their writers. Like thats not something 'cool' or anything to say. Suicide is a serious thing. I feel like everyone who is slightly depressed is not identifying with the show and might follow in her footsteps. * - Cylow - Apr 13, 2017 I've seen this exact same idea on the Forbes review of the show. Anyways, if anyone actually the show promotes that then they've got it all wrong. It can easily be misinterpreted but that's why it's labeled MA anyways. * - Mr. Robot - Apr 13, 2017 (Apr 13, 2017 12:56 PM)Juicy- Wrote: One of my close friends watched the show last week. I personally hope they do. If they are that influenced by a TV show and have that little of a will to continue living, then all we can hope for is they do commit suicide. * - SirAlex - Apr 15, 2017 I watched this, Only started watching it because my other half was watching it. Made her start from the beginning after she was like 3 episodes in. I was hooked. The story was great. I have to disagree that it "romanticizes" suicide or depression though. What the show does do however is show that just because someone seems normal and happy (In some ways) it doesn't mean they cant be depressed or suicidal. I also have to say that the scene that shows her suicide was pretty damn realist especially sound-wise the noise made my stomach turn! |
