The most simple method would be:
You could protect yourself by:
  • Installing a VM
  • Installing sandboxy
You can also scan the file with:
  • Nobot
  • VirusTotal
  • Hybrid-analysis.com

By now you should know your answer.

This. Or manually check if the program tries connecting to any servers once you run it.

This makes almost no sense. How can a file be harmless if it is infected? Or are you talking about false positives? Are you trying to distinguish a file between a RAT and another type of virus?

Virus total or using a virtual machine.
