My parents don't get online privacy; how do I make them change their mind? - Honey Sіngh - Apr 18, 2017

So, in my family we have been debating for a while over online privacy and the surveillance society.
I argue how dangerous it is constantly.
My parents are oddly enough extreme leftists.
I've tried constantly to argue things that would go with their leftist agenda such as how no online privacy would mean racial profiling on the loose etc.
And also how dangerous it is for data to be constantly online.
I tried arguing what if the data on you leaks, someone hacks you.
Their entire and only argument is that anyone for internet privacy is a criminal, a thief, and they have nothing to personally hide no matter what argument I throw at them that's totally viable.
Is it possible you guys could help me?

Try telling them if they value their social relationships, they should put their information on private. The amount of personal information you give another individual defines the relationship you have with them. They are leveling out all of their relationships, and they will never have a "best" relationship with anyone. So, if your parents wish to maximize their relationships, they should limit the amount of information they share with strangers.

Most people that want internet privacy is not like because they're doing illegal shit but prefer to have more privacy than you'd have anywhere else. There is a reason why the world wide web was created.
And most people/companies breaching other people's privacy on the internet is more for their own gain to either scrape data or ads.

Just put things into perspective, make sure they know that the CIA has the ability to listen to you through your T.V.

Fix your opsec brah..

Just kidding. Try to inform them about online scams and cold callers. They are sold information about you that is collected by websites that you visit and things that you search for are fed back to you. They may have the thought of "We have nothing to hide, why does it matter?" - Just explain to them the risks of having their information public. If you're a gamer & they know you play a lot, explain that there are kids out there who play these games that get pissed off when they lose and will attempt to dox/swat you, etc. Just be careful not to have your games taken away rather than having what you want.

Online privacy is over valued, if you, a nobody, thinks someone wants to "hack" you or stalk you then you're retarded.

It's just like people using vpn to log into facebook - hackforums. It's not needed, you do not need to hide yourself, you're doing nothing important or dangerous that AT LEAST 1,000 other members aren't already doing.

Cops aren't gonna come knocking at your door because there's 30 connections to your ip, because they are finding people with 100,000 connections to a offshore server that only has the ip of the persons VPN that he used to connect thru tor...... you're nothing.
