Text file written in windows when opened on linux machine shows weird letters. - my7h - Apr 25, 2017

So I've had a little problem. I have this program called ChromePass on a USB and I tested it out on a school computer, it worked and showed a list of save passwords so I click on the option to save it as a text file. Here's where the problem occurs. I plug the usb to read the files on my linux machine and there seems to be some issue and it only displays 3 weird letters. What did I do wrong and What do i do?

Change the encoding of the file.

Yeah 99.9% chance it's an encoding error.
On that note, also be aware that Linux uses LF for newlines, whereas Windows uses CRLF as default.

Nevermind, I solved it by opening the text file with chrome instead of the linux Text editor. LibreOffice was also working but it had # in between every letter which made it hard to read.

yeah that means it wasn't plain ansi text, It was formatted for a word processor. text editors are meant for raw text

Here, let me just quote another user's post about their experience when messing with their school's computer property.

When I keylogged my teachers back in middle school they wanted me to pay a $3k fine because they had to hire special IT-people to clean up my shit. Even though I had written the keylogger myself and knew how to get rid of it they would not let me as they didn't trust me. My parents and I didn't have the money and they threatened to go to the police lol. I was lucky with one very kind teacher who jumped in for me, could've ended way worse. Anyhow they wanted to kick me out, which would have ruined my opportunity to finish middle school.

Moral of the story; don't hack your school lol.

Keep this in mind, and keep in mind that if you are stealing the passwords of other PC users, which would most likely be other kids who go to your school, their parents are basically able to (if you get caught, which is very likely) sue the fuck out of your parents. Please take the time to reconsider what you do at school, and consider doing it at home, or not at all.
