Making a profitable rig out of my old parts.. Kinda - Skidy - May 4, 2017

I have an semi-old PC lying around at home, specs.

Motherboard: https://www.amazon.co.uk/ASUS-LGA1151-M-Plus-Micro-ATX-Motherboard/dp/B017M5K0JG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1493944330&sr=8-1&keywords=Asus+H110M-A+Socket+LGA1151+VGA+DVI+HDMI

RAM: 2x 4GB RAM

CPU: i3 something (doesn't need to be that big for this rig)

PSU: 750W

CPU: 550ti (only thing thats old af).

Today after mining on my RX 380 for 12 hours I earnt £0.9. I pay for electricity as a 1 off fee at my Uni accommodation so no electricity fees.

~12 hours minutes worth of mining. 1:31am UK time.

£0.9182265 | $1.1864533

In 24 hours thats £1.83 | $2.37.

Going to just use my old parts and purchase 2x R9 380's that cost £120 each.

2*£120 = £240 | $310

So in theory, I will get not double the Mh/s just lets say 1.6x more.

£1.83x1.6 = £2.92 | $3.77 a day.
£240/2.92 = 82 days (~ 3 months) to pay off the 2 cards.

In theory £2.92 x 365 = £1065.8 - (£240+£100 - GPU and Fans etc..)

£725 | $936.92 a year of pure profit. This doesn't include the concept of the coin increasing either.

I am definitely going to do this and add to it (in time add another GPU) etc..
If ETH becomes not as profitable in the future, I will either mine other altcoins or even rebuild the PC and sell it off as a "gaming PC"

I will use this thread to update everyone from the very very beginning. Will post images on the weekend. Ill post me building it, parts, profits, etc..etc..

I could in theory sell space on it or a small server of some sort. So my question to your HF is what are your thoughts?

You sure you turn a profit taking electricity considerations into the cost?

I said in my thread I pay for a 1 off electricity cost at my University, which I have to do to live here so.. Its not taken into account.

Says in thread he isnt paying for it.
Mining is actually more profitable than I originally thought. My mining method was making 13$ a day. Not to shabby imho!

Didn't notice that my bad.

$13 a day, woah!... But how much did your rig cost?

I am open to the idea of purchasing 2x high performance cards BUT I need to keep this rig small. My Uni room isn't that big.

Since you have fixed fees in electricity, did you look at monero mining with both your CPU and GPU ? It will probably get you more $ / day

Ah I see, so I could mine on my GPU (ETH) and CPU (XMR).

Don't want to kill the computer. If you think that will work I could try it. Any other thoughts on this?

Yes you can, Monero (and other coins using cryptonight algorythm) was based on the fact that they tried to limit GPU mining, so a GPU is only 2-3 times better than a CPU.
With your I3 you could get more hashrate (depending on the gen of the I3 too !)
But ETH recently did a nice bump in price, so you will have to do tests and checkouts what is more profitable ✌

But as far i remember when i tested it one month ago, my 980ti was more profitable on Monero than ethereum and Zcash 😉

Edit: and no you won't kill your computer haha, i got an old AMD card that has mined for literally years (i was mining litecoin in 2012 with it 😁 )
Just look at CPU and GPU core temp time to time, don't abuse the voltage when overcloking and you are good

Thank you very much, I will try this out!

Two things.

1) I really don't want to cause a fire at Uni because I've gone home for the weekend and left this machine running lol. Might have to turn it off when I am not there. So - like a fair few days.. Buuutt...

2) I didn't take into account the Mh/s including my 550ti. Apparently its only 5.2Mh/s, but it adds to it! Would using 2 R9 380's and 1 550ti mess things up?

What if they see you're pulling that much power all the time? And will you have made all your money back before you leave uni?

I own the place at uni for 51.1 weeks.
All bills included.
Its a massive massive building (400) people.

Really think they'll see Im pulling that much power?

1) Yea i won't leave it running a full weekend alone tho, but that won't cause a fire .. GPU and CPU are self protected for that since atleast 1990 haha
But beware were you put your pc, need to have a good ventilation

2)
Nah shouldn't change anything apart that you will need 2 different miner, a CUDA miner and a OpenCL miner

The two miners wouldn't be an issue. I was just going to use Claymore tbh and then the other one for the CPU mining.

Never the less, it will be a fun project. And for ~£320, its a nice little hobby and profit.

I feel like they'd notice your mining. A few hundred watts of consumption constantly will ramp up their meters.

Hopefully they're lenient about things.
