Having fast RAM has an extremely small effect on gaming performance? - GoodDealThanks - May 13, 2017

Is it true that having really fast RAM (main system memory and not VRAM) has only an extremely small effect on gaming performance?

I saw a video on youtube of someone playing the witcher 3 on 1440p using a GTX 1080, using average speed memory, and then fast memory, and it barely made a 1-2 fps difference.

What about outside of gaming? Does fast RAM have any significant effect on boot times, program installation, load times, etc..?

Pretty sure newer processors are able to take advantage of faster memory more. Ryzen especially benefits from having high speed DDR4 RAM. But, the difference really isn't going to be worth upgrading memory just for it, it's still a few frames extra at best.

Yeah, considering the difference in performance, it's not really worth upgrading. As far as I know RAM is primarily used for handling large loads like multi-tasking and such.

Gamiming normally focuses on GFX and CPU, have some decent hardware installed for both and you are pretty much set.

You at least need a average size RAM for able to play games and after that if you want to focus on quality upgrade to better vram.

What is the JEDEC of DDR4?

You would not be able to see a difference to the human eye.

Ram will only do so much. Your HDD is the bottleneck .

SSD's are extremely costly.

You can use an HDD for mass storage, and an SSD for games/programs.

It depends on what CPU and chipset you have on your motherboard. The newer AMD Ryzen CPUs are heavily dependent on Ram speed for maximum performance. Buying 3200Mhz ram is worth it in my opinion over slower ram if you have a Ryzen CPU. That can translate to a few percent better FPS, which while may not be extremely noticeable, it helps prevent you from dipping down below 60FPS on occasion.

I have an i7 7700K and Z270 motherboard.

Ofcourse there are differences but not much and it doesnt worth the price I think.
