Protecting against ransomeware - G3Ml1nz - May 23, 2017

Hi all,

Wondering how people are protecting themselves from ransomware? Apart from the obvious not opening emails from any foreign princes wanting to hide their millions in your bank account.

The reason I ask is I look after IT for hundreds of clients, for the most part they are all secure but I still feel the protection could be better
I install anti virus, anti ransomeware and have daily backups just in case. I close off or firewall as many services as I can to the internet but there are always those clients who refuse to close things like RDP to the internet. The spam protection on email servers is pretty hot but of course some still slip through.

Cheers

Hi,

I would recommend keeping your windows OS updated at all time, as the ransomwares are exploiting zero-days in Windows. Training the end-users is also something really crucial regarding ransomwares. Last thing, do never pay the ransomware.

Cheers,

Like usually you do with other malware.

1. Keep antivirus up to date

2. Never open .exe .bat .reg anything that executeable from untrusted source

3. Dont open file that emailed to you from unknown

4. Scan your pc every week or everyday if you can

5. Only download file from trusted source

Thanks guys

I am already doing what you both suggest so I guess we should be OK. Our biggest weakness is definitely the staff, more training needed I think

Thanks all

Malwarebytes can prevent ransomware pretty well, I believe even before the encrypting starts.
