I bought a "used" laptop - I want take MAX precautions - Mr. Moe - Jun 10, 2017

Hey, I bought a used xpr 13 today for 670$USD. (idk if it was a good deal) I'll mainly be using it for school and forex & crypto trading so there will be valuables in this laptop. I want to make sure that the previous owner didn't set any keyloggers or anything to steal my digital funds.

Any advice at all will be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Couldn't you just replace the SSD completely or just reformat?

* - Jopemeister - Jun 10, 2017

Replace the SSD/ Use external booted tool to overwrite it with 0's

* - HighTier - Jun 10, 2017

You could download Malwarebytes and run a scan if you want.

Just fully reset the computer or replace the hard drive.

man thats a great fuckin deal! i'm in the process of getting an xps 13 myself. Unfortunately I'm prepared to pay 1k when I get mine :( you're lucky, but yeah since you bought a used one just format the SSD

Format the drive. Or to be 100% safe replace the hard drive with a new SSD :) btw thats a sick laptop! grats!

The only way to be 100% sure is replacing the SSD, some advanced malwares can even survive a full formatting, because they are hidden in the software part of the disk, instead of the storage part.

Thanks for everyones great reply! I guess I have to spend a few more dollars but it will be worth it in my opinion =)
I'll also download the malwarebtye scanners as suggested
Thanks the value recognition -the guy must have wanted to get rid of it quick :)

I'm happy you went with my suggestion. I hope it works well for you.

I mean, if he really wants to, he could of placed a bootkit.

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
  • Right click to run as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.

  • Press Scan button.

  • It will produce logs called FRST.txt and Addition.txt in the same directory the tool is run from.

  • Please copy and paste the logs back here.

He could, but who the fuck would go though such trouble for nothing?

I got a Micro Star GL-something-something. It serves it's purpose.

You don't format a SSD

It kills it
