5000gbp to invest but no idea what to invest in, looking for low risk - Seifer - Jun 26, 2017

Hey HF, I believe this is the correct place for this thread but let me know if their is a better place.

Okay I have £5000 ($6367.00) spare in my bank, currently it is just sitting their doing nothing and I have no need for it, currently looking for low risk investments and was hoping someone here would have some good ideas on what.

A few notes:
I am based in the UK, 20 years old and in full time employment.

Here are what I have looked at:

Property:
Their is currently student accommodation studio flats for sale, they are each £20,000, so I would need to get a loan/mortgage however the student accommodation is managed by student accommodation company meaning that they do most of the home owners requirements such as collecting rent, holding a deposit for damages, finding tenants etc, it also means that as soon as I buy the studio flat their is a tenant already living their so I stand collecting rent as soon as possible.

The rent is £85 per week, meaning roughly £6367 per year, 4 years to break even. To me this sounds a tad too good to be true and that I might be missing something considering I have never invested in property before.

Peer To Peer Loan:
I have also been looking into peer to peer loans such as sites like prosper however it seems very risky that their is nothing that really holds the person to pay back the loan, also prosper seems to be USA only, so I need something that would work in the UK, if anyone has had experience on this, I would love to hear.

Thanks for any replies and for reading~

I would put some money in a Roth IRA if you haven't already ( this is going to help plan for your future )

I live in the UK, however after looking into an IRA it seems to be the same as a pension? I do have a workplace pension but that is just 2% of my income.

Invest in ETH/BTC other good lookin cryptocurrency. ( Med/High Risk )
P2P Load sounds like a good idea, as there have to be some kind of security/guarrantee that you get the money back.

I also think property could be a good idea, as i think the building/Living Costs will just keep rising.

property buying is always a good investment, but Since you only have 5000 GBP this means you have to get involved with the bank, and Banks doesn't give you money because they like you!

Fuck knows what sort of mudhut you're living in for 85 quid a week mate lmao. But the key word in your thread is low risk. Low risk investing with a piss small amount like that is useless, you won't make shit mate.

Go invest and hold stocks for a company, you can find good newborns at websites like kickstarters, just do the math and hold their stocks and when they hit the ceiling - you know what to do then! Just do not hold for too long as this is a small amount!

Have a look into a stock & shares ISA. The less commission the better, I use Hargreaves Lansdown however there are far more better ones with less comission, I’ve just had it for years.

If you are looking for low risk, then you are subsequently also looking for low return. If that money is not needed in the next 10 years or so, and you won't need to tap into it to pay your bills, at the age of 20 you should have a high tolerance for risk. I do not know your financial situation so I can't say much more than that.

You mentioned 2% goes into your pension plan. What kind of pension plans are available through your employer? Is there something like a 401k with an employer match? If so you should contribute the maximum amount because that's basically free money. If you have not opened a tax advantage account, such as an IRA you should do that as well. You can contribute up to $5500 every year. Buy a low cost index fund that tracks the S&P 500 and leave it alone. You'll thank yourself in 40 years when you are ready to retire.

Avoid the get rich quick schemes offered by some HackForum users. This website is infested with swarms of idiots. Definitely do not give your money away to be handled by that guy who wants to manage your money in Forex trading while taking 50% of the profits.

Good luck
