Got My Scholarship - Lukas - Aug 15, 2017

I've been working my ass off for this. I wasn't an exceptional student during high school, and due to this, I had a tendency to fall off at times. I started getting involved with negative shit that impacted me greatly, so I decided to put an end to it. This past summer I took a few additional courses to help me adjust and get a feel for what college is like. Needless to say, I'm in for a long road ahead of me. My major is biology due to the fact I plan on applying to dental school once I graduate.

This scholarship will help me out greatly. My tuition is ~$27,000/yr including room and board. As I'm a broke college student, and my parent's lack of confidence in my ability to maintain a mature attitude to take college seriously, I was in dire need of additional funding. I received $13,000 in academic grants, thankfully, but as you can see, it was not enough. Several days before classes started, I received an email regarding a scholarship opportunity. I obtained a letter of recommendation from a mentor in the past, and wrote a letter of interest myself. A few days later I get a reply with some good news. Across the span of 2 years, I will receive a stipend worth $7,500 in return for my research efforts.

I will be conducting a shitload of research my freshman year regarding the topic of cancer, tumor biology in specific. I chose this topic as it is the only one out of the selection that I have a personal connection to. My mother passed away several years ago due to breast cancer, so you could say I am doing this in her honor. God bless.

I will be compiling the information and at the end of the semester, presenting it to the director of the scholarship committee, along with my professors, peers, and additional guests.
f.y.i. - I suck at public speaking so this should be an experience.

For anyone interested, this is the research topic description:
Research focusing on gene expression changes leading to the abnormal development in cancer, particularly steroid hormone responsive genes in tumors of the central nervous system. This lab also investigates anti-tumor activity of natural products and organometallic compounds and endocrine disrupting effects of environmental contaminants.

Congratulations. Just goes to show that you can beat any tough task if you put your mind to it. Keep up the awesome work - definitely well deserved.

Congrats man, biology isnt the best degree financially and job wise but I love talking about things on the biological level. Hopefully the college isnt one of those political correct ones that dont discuses the biological differences between the genders tho. That will just hurt you and not help at all.

GL man :)

Congrats.
Please don't be like me and lose your scholarship over something silly like letting your grades drop.
I lost mine and it ended up costing me thousands of dollars, something I regret to this day, in my third year of college.
