Smart Home tech - Pronouncer - Oct 11, 2017 What's the view on smart home technology? Also mind helping me find some cheap tech stuff for my "smart home" compatible with Alexa for UK max of $50 am item. * - CyberStrike - Oct 11, 2017 This is the big thing now a days, my garage door opener is a smart device all it would take is an attacker get's into the wifi and wait for the owner to take out their phone lock doors or open the garage capture the traffic then replay the traffic, and devices respond doing xyz. IoT is one of these things that people don't understand the ramifications of, even manufacturers try very hard to bury the work of researchers. That said what stops an attacker from downloading firmware backdooring it then proceeding to backdoor it coming to your house unlocking the doors real quick ten uploading backdoored firmware. Many IoT devices also run telnet and default credentials have been released so you will want to be very careful. * - Major League - Oct 11, 2017 I love the ideas and creations that smart home technology has given us but I am extremely cautious of using it in my own home. I'm skeptical as to the exact security measures implemented in the software of the smart devices. If these items are easily hackable it could turn someones entire life upside down. I do see some good uses for the technology for instance in elderly individuals that cannot afford your typical nursing home, it could allow them access to someone to talk to, easy access to reporting an emergency, and general day to day help around the house * - Pronouncer - Oct 12, 2017 You guys took it too far, in talking like lights and stuff * - CyberStrike - Oct 12, 2017 Sorry didn't mean to go all crazy but yeah just make sure devices are locked down there is an IoT thermostat that ppl turn up the temp and make ppl pay a ransom. Lights I can see not being too crazy. * - SEMRUSH - Oct 12, 2017 Its the future, IOT. But as you know, everything has vulnerabilities and if everyone moves to IOT, we'll all be unknowingly part of a huge botnet sooner or later lol * - FamousHater - Oct 12, 2017 (Oct 12, 2017 01:41 AM)SEMRUSH Wrote: Its the future, IOT. Light switches do fine to turn off lights, except maybe for when you're laying down in the bedroom and don't want to get up. I don't need to speak to Alexa to search for something on Google, my keyboard works just fine. But maybe I'm going to be the old fashioned grandpa who doesn't give a shit about new technology in some 50+ years or so. * - FamousHater - Oct 12, 2017 (Oct 12, 2017 02:38 AM)DafforDucc Wrote: I think many smart house devices are pointless.
