Some frequency questions - KJTR1 - Oct 19, 2017

Is it really true that the walkie talkies that police use are on VHF and UHF frequencys?
And that police dispatch from the cop car to and from is on GPS 1 and GPS 2 frequency?

Depends on your region. It's possible. You could also just use a police scanner app if you are interested.

It is quite interesting to try one of those! ^^

This only works if you have somebody in your town broadcasting the scanner, Unless you are interested in towns other than your own. For starters I would either recommend the rtl-sdr for $10 or the baofeng UV-5R for $30. Those are probably the easy way into scanning and RF hacking/research imo.

About the walkie talkies yes. Now about the GPS, I really doubt it, GPS2 is for military use and even if police had access to it, it would probably be only US police.

I've listened to emergency radio using RTL-SDR

Problem is in my area they use channel hopping and encryption... so you need multiple RTL-SDR dongles to cope with the channel hopping, and DSD for the encryption.
There might be newer decryption software than DSD, but that's what I used a few years ago...

Fun stuff... but difficult... and half the time nothing interesting going on...

I found it more interesting to use SDR to monitor planes passing overhead using ASDB
