Do you take notes? - Emily Brontë - Nov 12, 2017

When learning a new language or something about programming in general does anybody treat it as if you're reading a textbook and take notes? Or would it just end up being a waste of time to take notes? Curious as to what other people do/think about this as somebody who personally takes notes.

Yes, primarly when I am learning a new language outside of a classroom I would still take notes. My reason behind this is that if I don't take notes and write it down, I won't be able to remember what I learned. Also, I will test myself once a week on the material that I learned. It takes diciplin but in the end, it is worth it.

Notes can be both helpful and a curse, on one hand, you memorize things better when you write them down. On the other hand, you have to ask yourself if you are really going to use them (going trough tons of notes is hell, believe me).

How do you test yourself? I have notes, except I am not sure how I will test myself.

There's a program I used called "Anki" it's a smart flashcard testing system to help you remember things.

I keep code snippets under suitable names. Like for python, I have threading templates and for node, I have like async await/ promises and so on.

I find looking at the code for a topic is a better way for me to learn than notes.

I don't usually take notes, but I do often times challenge myself to read (and understand) others' code. Taking the time to understand code written by someone else helps you identify new coding styles, as well cause your brain to function in a way that you are not accustomed to, due to the fact that most programmers will solve the same problem differently.
