People ignored the filesize limit when using remote avatars. Upgraded users can upload their avatars instead, the leet upgrade will do.

Previous versions of MyBB didn't allow me to remove them via settings. Otherwise I would have.

Sounds likely because of bandwith/pagespeed on the user end - as well as a "potential" security risk.
Just download and upload one :)
