CPU or RAM more important for VPN? - L0-kae - Jan 6, 2018

Hey HF I've got a simple question because i'm an idiot.

I've bought myself a VPS and put a VPN on it
I'm not sure how much i should spend on the specs of the server and how important that is, and why?

any advice on this front would be much appreciated
and pleas excuse my ignorance.

thanks in advance

Hey man , would love to help you but I would need to know what do you intend to use it for exactly ? if you will only use it for VPN than the specs don't really matter in my opinion

Hey man a VPS stands for Virtual private server, it could be used for many many things..... imagine it being your computer connected to the web 24/7 that you control remotely

Is that? many many things? how cool right..please say to me what's good about having one VPS that we control remotely when we own a desktop PC which is also connected to the web/net 24/7?

Yeah a VPS is a virtual private server, i have a linux server with a vpn on it that i connect to when i use the Internet and run an ovpn tunnel threw a device attached to my ethernet cable so it's portable.

I use my vpn on one computer but i use that computer to do alot of work online so i was wondering how much i should spend on the specs of my vps and why they would matter, i don't store anything on the server it's just used for the vpn.

It depends, the CPU will make a big difference in speed, however RAM will let you do a lot more on the server at the same time.
Depends on your needs.

Your computer is a physical object that can break and that you have to be infront of to use unless you use remote access back to it also it's linked to you implicitly.

a VPS is just like your computer but it's virtual and private (depending on the provider), you can put whatever you want on it then delete and remake it ect at any time.

What would you recommend a minimum "to be safe" amount to make sure i get more than?

again excuse my ignorance, my old server never had options i looked at as i just use it as a vpn.

You should be looking at the internet connection, rather than the computer.

2gb ram, at least a 2nd gen core i5/xeon e5. You could probably get away with 1gb ram and core i3/xeon e3.

If you intend on using a VPS for something illegal I wouldn't recommend it considering most virtual private servers are setup on one dedicated server or more that are shared with others even if you used a VPN.

RE: CPU or RAM more important for VPN? - lust - Jan 6, 2018

If you're just using this for a VPN, then the specs shouldn't really matter. Although, if you plan on having a ton of other stuff running alongside the VPN, I'd advise prioritising RAM over CPU. It just depends on what your needs are.

RE: CPU or RAM more important for VPN? - YERANUK - Jan 6, 2018

You're loading DATA STREAMS, you're not rendering anything on the VPS. So obviously get the cheapest VPS with modest internet connection.

You may want at least some ram, in case you're using the VPS for other uses in the future, but basically 200MB ram is enough.

RE: CPU or RAM more important for VPN? - .ÐÆṀØÑ - Jan 6, 2018

so to resume it for you.

Don't invest a lot on the specs if you are just using it for VPN.

also, do not use it for something illegal.

RE: CPU or RAM more important for VPN? - Extortian - Jan 6, 2018

I'm surprised no one here has mentioned CPU. The CPU has alot to do with setting up a VPN but if its just a host-host VPN it doesn't utilize the CPU much as others. If you plan to use OpenVPN then most VPS servers you find will be fine.
