How do I access the internet from a linux VPS? - GoodlookingSal - Feb 26, 2018

Linux VPS's don't have a GUI, so the internet can't be directly accessed from a linux VPS.

The only solution I see is by using the command lines but this requires a lot of technical knowledge.

Is there any other way to access the internet from a linux VPS, or not possible?

a linux vps should be auto configured to access the internet

Are you saying you'd like to install a web browser on your Linux server? Yeah, not a good idea.

Instead, configure your web browser to use your VPS as a SOCKS5 proxy, I guess you're on Windows so you can use PuTTY to do this, there are plenty of tutorials. :)

Good luck!

As everyone here has said ummm bad really bad idea. using the internet as said create a proxy .. you also can setup your prerouting on the vps to forward and on your machine to route traffic through the vps. Honestly if you are dead set on a browser not sure why but if you are .. a text based browser might be the best option and you can still keep some assemblence of security. But there is a really good set of reasons why you don't want a GUI and all this jazz.. being that x11 will now open you up to possible issues security wise. You know at work okay we have multiple IPs like 8 per team (pentesting) we have routers setup to pretty much just redirect our traffic for scanning or whatever but that is what we do but we don't use our VPS's to "access the internet" we run email/xfil/payload/teamserver/C2 and a legit domain all of these different servers just are subdomains. But only one with a proxy is just our teamserver and that is just for us to route through compromised machines and run tools on the network.

Why isn't it a good idea? I believe it is a brilliant idea.

There is nothing on the server to compromise. It is only being used as a proxy.

So you wouldn't mind if someone hosted malware or something else equally as shitty? 😧 Obviously you don't want someone to use a VPS you are paying for right.. Also if you are using it as a proxy what if someone get's in and proceeds to log everything going and coming? Or they just act like dicks and restrict urls? Sets up acl to deny usage between certain hours. So yes you care if the server is compromised I would hope.

I think that we are just giving best practices. I had a client years ago before "core" windows server installs this guy never changed their password they used it like how you describe as a webserver/email/ftp and beyond that as a regular web browsing machine, literally firefox on this thing. After that machine was compromised it cost them 1600 dollars for one week and after I was done they went back to their default password, and removed lockouts after 3 failed login attempts and firefox cost them another 1600 and then they got the point.

Soooo why don't you just set it up as a proxy server. You'll either enter it into your web browsers proxy settings or you'll route all of your network traffic through it. While really, good practice and a few addons will be fine with a browser on a server, you'd just treat it like any other machine, you'd have to portforward X11, which in my opinion is annoying and super slow to begin with.
It's better to just route your traffic through it, much like Tor.

These scenario's you describe are worst case scenario's and very unlikely to happen.

Well it's your VPS, best of luck.

You can setup a desktop environment and then forward X11 via SSH to your computer. I would suggest havinng min 2gb of ram and using a light DE such as LXDE or XFCE.

You can also setup a proxy as others have mentioned using SSH, on Linux its really reasy. ssh -D 9999 username@ip-address-of-ssh-server and in your browser the porxy settings would be localhost:9999

x11 over ssh but thats maybe laggy, how about openvpn if the traffic has to be routed through the vps.

OpenVPN is not a normal VPN service and requires multiple steps to setup. It is more for the technically savvy.

Hehe correct but a little challenge made the one or another geek which isnt a bad thing :)
openvpn documentation isnt so tricky and there are scripts for everything nowadays.

Whooaa I think I remember trying that tut. It never works exactly like it says in the tut so if one isn't technically savvy, it makes it impossible to follow.
