[Sui Generis]
Simple Profile Picture Tutorial

This is a tutorial on how to create a simple profile picture for social media, Hackforums, or wherever you want.
Requirements:
  • Adobe Photoshop

  • Internet connection if you want to download new fonts and images

Note: I'm using an older version of Adobe Photoshop, but any version will work.

Step 1. – Setting everything up
  • Create a new file and set up your dimensions.

  • Ctrl-N to open a new file within Photoshop.

  • Input your dimensions, make sure you select “pixels” from the drop-down menu.

  • Hit OK.

These are the dimensions I used. (400x400)

Step 2. – Background Choices
  • Decide if you want a plain background (white, black, etc.) or if you want to add a different image to the background of your picture.

  • For this tutorial I will use an image I found on https://www.unsplash.com

  • Save the image

  • Drag the image on the file you created within Photoshop in step 1.

  • Position the image where you think it looks best.

  • Click the check box for “Show Transform Controls” in the top left of Photoshop to easily resize the image and position it where you want.

  • Once you have positioned the image where you want it, you can go ahead and untick “Show transform controls” for now.

  • In this tutorial I added a filter called “Rough Pastels” with default settings to my background image, but of course you can add your own filters that you think looks the best.

  • Before we add text to the image, lets make sure the rulers are enabled so we can align our text properly.

  • Ctrl-R to enable rulers.

  • Once you have rulers enabled click-and-hold on the top ruler and drag your mouse down to the center of the image until you feel it snap into place at the center of the image.

  • Do the same thing for the other ruler.

This is what it should look like with the rulers enabled. (If you want to hide the rulers at any point it’s Ctrl-H)

Step 3. – Font Decision
  • For this tutorial I went with a font called Death Star.

  • Select the horizontal type tool on the sidebar.

  • Click-and-drag the text tool over your image and type in your text.

  • You can select the font size and type that you want, which should be easy to see on the top bar of Photoshop.

  • Once the text looks properly aligned save it as your preferred file type.

I added some more filters and text effects to the image. I will include the PSD so you can go in and edit whatever you want.

Here are some of the websites I always use for backgrounds and fonts.
Instead of paying for someone to create a profile picture for you, download the PSD I linked and make one yourself.
