Pruning Posts - Omniscient - Mar 4, 2018

We have 8 million posts in the Lounge. That's about 20% of all HF posts. I plan to delete at least 6 million of them in the near future. This will be based on age so don't worry about your new LoungeHead award stats. This won't effect that.

The reason this will be done is because our posts table is not manageable at this size under our current server resources. Eventually I may get another server but that's a ton of work and even before doing that the DB size should be better managed anyways.

I may look into other sections to prune as well but saving us 6 million posts is a very good start.

That's a lot of posts. First question which comes to mind is; Will this affect SEO?

Also, I'm sure a lot of members will be losing their post stats (RIP Vitani's Mate I guess).

Will this effect our post count?

A majority of my posts are in the lounge.

I get your point, but wouldn't it be better to just keep them for SEO purposes?
I'm sure there are tons of discussions which attract people from outside HF and makes them register.

RE: Pruning Posts - Biggy - Mar 4, 2018

Oof, that’s a lot of posts. I see the need to do this though.

RE: Pruning Posts - Punisher - Mar 4, 2018

It would be cool if there was a way to back the data up and archive it on a separate server, but that's too much work for no real purpose other than record keeping and nostalgia.

RE: Pruning Posts - Biggy - Mar 4, 2018

Regarding the SEO comments, let’s be honest, is there really much SEO we need to save from the lounge? I don’t think it will affect search results too much. It’s mainly other sections of HF that it would affect.

If it has to be done, it has to be done.

Majority of everyone's posts are in the Lounge. It probably will indeed affect our post count unless Omniscient finds a way to remove the posts, yet keep our post count the same.

Seems necessary to me. Hack Forums has one unruly beast of a database.

I doubt it'll affect your post count since it most likely just +1's your post count everytime you post, instead of counting all of your posts.

At this point fixing and improving HF takes priority. Not sure Lounge has much SEO value anyways.

Yes, it might. Depends on how far back we go in order to prune the 6 million posts. After the prune a post recount will occur.

I don't think that's true with the Lounge.

Things just need to get fixed. I can't even do anything with posts table now. A prune can greatly help.

Hmm, does HF recount all your posts? I thought it was a simple Integer which was being incremented by 1 every time you post. Since that'd be the most efficient way in my eyes.
Because whenever I replied in a thread and the thread got deleted/removed, my post count didn't seem to change. Or does the thread secretly get moved to a hidden section?

RE: Pruning Posts - Hoodie+ - Mar 4, 2018

Lounge threads and posts are pretty shit anyways...
Pretty shit as in LQ content.

RE: Pruning Posts - VirtualFrost - Mar 4, 2018

Seems fair, lounge posts don't necessarily ever have any need to be bumped back up so I couldn't see this being so bad.
