i recall some years back i met a girl
her family was shit
they grandfather was glorified for being in the wars
a hero, they said.
not all those that march home carry their humanity back with them
she was regarded his favorite
always getting the best gifts
i thought it was for real and sweet as sometimes she joked about it
i just didn't see the painful sarcasm
then her grandfather died
we drank all night
she told me her story
i didn't know what to do
all i could was to be sorry
turns out most of her family knew
but they put their respect for their grandfather
before their sister, their cousin, their daughter.
all she could ever do was cry and accept
then one day she was just gone
