Java - Managed or Native - kinsella - Aug 11, 2018

Hello,

I want to know if java is a managed or native programming language.

And what do I have to install on my system before I can run java applications.

Java is a managed programming language if by managed you mean it's non-native since it's compiled to bytecode and not native machine code. Java applications require the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) to run. If you wish to develop Java software, you need the Java Development Kit (JDK).

Both the JRE and JDK have the Java Virtual Machine. The JDK is simply an extension of the JRE with extra development tools. If you're not planning on coding in Java, get the JRE, otherwise, get the JDK.
