Linux Dist for Programmer/Haxor - F.A.S.T - Dec 21, 2018

So anyone knows a Linux Dist that a Programmer and Hacker would use. For work and for personal use. On which you can easily save files and not end up with a broken system often.

I've been using Kali as my main OS for more than a year now. But I've read a lot about using kali as main os is not recommend or is considered bad use.

I don't find it any different in usage. It seems like any other dist other than having some tools preinstalled.

I recommend Ubuntu, if you don't wanna pretend to be a huge power user. You can add repos from BackBox Linux for pentesting tools.

Run anything as your main OS and maybe have a couple of tools installed, then just run something like Kali off a flash drive like it is intended to be used.

Keep in mind Kali is built on Debian.

@OP i'd just install Tallis since all traffic is routed through tor and also proxied. SQLMap goes through tor also. Just my opinion.

What is your point exactly?

Kali Linux is Debian. The only thing different is adding security tools? Most security personal don't even need half of those tools.

Really the only tools you need:
1: Metasploit
2: Hydra
3: NMAP
4: Wireshark
5: AirCrack-NG
6: John/HashCat
7: Maltego
I think I rest my case that we can confirm that Kali Linux is just another flavor of Debain but with extra tools built on it. Just as Bieban(Justin Bieber OS) is based on Puppy Linux. 🤝

RE: Linux Dist for Programmer/Haxor - CyberStrike - Dec 22, 2018

I think Ubuntu, have VirtualBox or VMware and install Kali there in a hypervisor. I run Ubuntu and use Parrot/Caine/REMnux/Windows 7/ Windows 10/ and various TurnKey Linux images for exploit work/testing.

Thanks for the opinion. I was really looking forward to Ubuntu. It seems to be the most bread-n-butter Linux there is.
There exists tools like Katoolin that you can use to Install Kali-Tools on any Linux Dist. Just some information for the one having same issue.

Gonna Switch to Ubuntu.

Yes Kali is derived from Debian I don't think anyone was questioning that, but it also has quite a few things added on such as a custom patched kernel and disabling certain things in order to be set up for penetration testing.

If it was me I would go with Arch or FreeBSD but as I get older I find it less interesting to customise or trick out the OS. When I was in college I'd be recompiling my kernels, changing the WMs and themes etc. For general purpose admin Debian is great and reliable, used it for many servers before I started using Arch. I'd still pick it as the default server OS if FreeBSD isn't a feasible option since it has the best networking stack.

Have a look at the Tsurugi distro. You might like it. It's heavily oriented towards digital forensics and pentesting.

Being derived from and being the same isn’t even remotely the same thing. Unless Ubuntu then is “just another flavor of Debian” and “Linux Mint is just debian with a theme”. There are thousunds of ways Kali differs from Debian and how Debian differs from Ubuntu or Mint. From how development is handled all the way down to the core. Now I’m not even gone into counting pre installed software.

Your post is completely out of context with this thread and has no realistic argument in it.

Amusing, I’ve forgotten that only 12 year olds that think they’re being smart use this site.
