People who hate on popular music. - Vitriol - Jan 5, 2019

So just want to create a post about this, I see this all the time.
Im very bad at organizing thoughts, and writing them out to look nice so just bare with me here.

So I was listening to Awful Things from Lil Peep, because I think it's a good song.
I scroll down to the comment section and I see someone commenting their favorite songs from Peep (some were his more popular songs) , and a couple of people responded with:
"You're just a sheep who only listens to popular music, you probably didn't listen to him before his death"

Being one of those people who didn't listen to him before his death, I got a little defensive, and supported the OP.
I find it really messed up there are people putting this guy down for no reason , just because they like some of his popular songs.
Let's face it, a lot of people hadn't heard of Peep before his death, and his death was pretty much a huge advertisement for him. Headlines everywhere, everyone was talking about him, and of course attention leads to more people listening to his music. Of course some people are going to discover him and enjoy his music if he's a good artist. Including myself.
I think it's extremely unfair for people to put everyone who heard of him after his death in a group. It's very toxic. If you like his most popular songs, you are a sheep. If you listen to him after his death , you are a sheep. I think they are all dumb accusations that no one should be able to dictate. Hearing of him before or after his death doesn't make you any more or less a fan of him.

His biggest songs got big for a reason, they were good songs. I'm sure he but just as much effort in them as his other songs, or even more. I just dislike when other people hate on you for enjoying a popular song. As if them only listening to songs from an artist that are underground or don't have as much views makes them special? I really don't get it. This stuff happens everywhere it was just easy to make it an example from a Peep video because this is where i've seen it, and I usually just ignore comments like these, but I figured I would rant a little tonight 👍

Why does it matter what some random guy in the YT comment section said? Just ignore him, no one really cares what you or anyone else listens to tbh.

A popular opinion is a wrong opinion. The same could be said about a popular item.

Possibly they are tired of hearing it maybe they listen to the radio xd

I've learned that there is no point arguing with someone over political/religious believes and music taste

No I just see it everywhere, and I guess I really just don't understand why? This thread was more for discussion than anything else. Just wanna hear some thoughts, obviously it can be ignored.

I agree for the most part. Having a favorite song that is the most popular doesn't mean anything though. When it comes to enjoying music, I don't get why numbers get involved as they really don't matter. If they are popular or dead, they could still be great songs.

Well, there could be many reasons why... Your best bet is to just ignore it though.

I don't care about what other people's music taste or their opinion on my music taste is.

You probably don't like my music, I probably don't care for yours.

Yes this is how it should be, but some people like to disregard all popular songs as bad songs, and listen to underground music while hating on everything popular because it makes them feel special.

Yeah you're right. I was just thinking maybe the people hating will read my comment and be like "shit, he's right." That seems extremely unlikely but the thought of it sounds nice LMAO.
If anything atleast I let the OP of the youtube comment know that someone understands and there is nothing wrong with enjoying popular songs or first hearing of an artist after they are dead.

Yeah I've heard that from people way too often, I always viewed it as a very invalid argument because the artists want to be remembered for ages - yet these 'superfans' act possessive over someone they listened too first, pretty much just denying anybody who gives the music positive attention. But oh well, not everybody is intelligent haha. btw listening to lil peep part 1 rn, been bumping it since it dropped & nothing but love

Haha, maybe in some situations but I don't think this time.
I've never heard of a Peep song on the radio except for the one he had with tentacion.

Thank you ! Lmao
Superfans is a good word, I'll use that as a label for now on.

I got a CD/Mixtape of Lil Peep part 1 from someone on eBay, because it feels nice to own things in hand instead of listening through an app all the time, and I thought quality is usually greater on CD in cars and stuff but it skips a lot for whatever reason!

Getting into sub-genres of music and finding smaller bands / artist is so much more enjoyable.

Especially when they come to your city and you're up front at the show, no one knows them but only you. :))

I agree actually. I mainly listen to underground music and smaller artists because that's what I enjoy as well.
I just don't think it's right to hate on people for enjoying popular music from an artist they enjoy. You'll never catch me listening to music on the radio or tweeting about drakes new song, but you'll also never catch me hating on someone for enjoying that either.

I don't follow waves either, and of course there are people who only listen to whats popular and do whats popular. But for some people to assume every single person that likes a popular song is a sheep is just a terrible accusation. They act as if as soon as a song becomes popular it loses the entire message.
