Shopify update - ONLY test orders for development stores - James Burnham - Mar 13, 2019

I got an email today. I kinda liked their development stores features

Quote:Changes that apply to all partners (effective March 13, 2019):

We will now restrict partners from soliciting merchants to leave the Shopify platform. In exchange for being a member of our partner ecosystem and having access to countless merchants, we require that our partners do not actively encourage our merchants to leave the Shopify platform.
Development stores can only be used to process test orders. They are not meant to bypass the need for a paid Shopify plan.

Changes that apply to developers (effective May 12, 2019):

All data relating to a merchant’s customers that a partner collects on behalf of the merchant (excluding any sensitive personal information) must be sent back to Shopify.
All checkout and payment processing must go through Shopify checkout. Partners cannot bypass Shopify checkout unless authorized by Shopify in writing.
Developers cannot create multiple applications that offer substantially the same services.

I know this is an old post

But

Can you actually bypass the checkout and get legit orders before actually having to pay for the subscription?

You can edit the product template and put a direct paypal button or a rocketr link or some other 3rd party site that can collect billing and shipping address and deliver digital goods.

So customers can't actually use the checkout as it's meant to be used?

Yes you can use shopify without a subscription with full functionality aside from the ability to subscribe to paid apps and not be charged until after your 50th sale

Some people say they have a way. I have no idea how. Maybe Gigabyte can help you.

All of my clients start with development stores and they have been able to accept payments like before, so looks like nothing changed.

I can confirm this. They allow first 50 free real orders.
