Someone told me that the best way to learn was to copy code from the internet into a VM and try to exploit it or something like that?

DVWA would be a good place to start.
Although the best would be getting Vulnerable machines from Vulnhub.

After you've learnt some of the ropes, I definitely recommend https://hackthebox.eu. Loads of the boxes are web application based, and it's legal to hack 'em (that's the point!)
Like I said, learn some beginner stuff first, but this sites is awesome.
