Why my RAM usage is so high? - White Girl - Aug 8, 2010

I have 4GB DDR3 @ 1333MHz. Kingston.

Last night, computer was running for about 2 days, yes I did download and install a lot of things. But last night, before going to bed, all what I did was browsing on firefox and chat on MSN and physic memory is on 95% used, ~3.70GB using. I was like WTF! Is it some memory leak or some virus? Hopefully it's not faulty stick!

So I decided to shut down the computer for night, and this morning I turned on. Physic memory was on ~20%. It barely has any startup because I only bought this PC one week ago and I have turned off some startup items too.

Now after one hour of normal usage: browsing firefox and msn, physic right now is on 45% used (1.80GB used). Although this morning I did 20 minutes of scan for rootkits, but I have found nothing unsual.

This is very strange!! I feel very depressed, need help? :(

I couldn't upload any image, because I have some new type of problem. I tried speedtest, download speed is fine as I paid for it, but most of time speedtest just fails to get to upload service and after few tries, i got about 0.02mb/s of upload and speedtest froze. I tried pingtest, result is TERRIBLE! My old result was grade A result, 0-1 jitter, 0% packet loss, but now it's grade C, 51 jitter and 5% packet loss. Wtf is going on?!

What AV are you currently using?

* - PhirewireNET - Aug 8, 2010

Did you clear all the Bloatware. Also Check whens running on the task bar(FAR RIGHT BOTTOM)

* - Tsgh Mike - Aug 8, 2010

Try running malwarebytes anti-malware just to be safe. located here http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html

* - White Girl - Aug 8, 2010

ESET NOD32, that's what I'm using.

I don't have bloatware installed, this is CLEAN fresh windows 7 install without some bloatware that came with Sony laptop or whatever like that. It didn't even included Java.

Which program is running on taskbar? AV, Steam, windows updater, adobe updater, GPU driver, mouse/webcam driver, speaker/network/other default shit, and that's it.

Did quick scan. Nothing found.

I'll do NOD32 scan.

Dona, Run a full system scan.

It is not wise to use DDR3 Ram for system that have less than 8 gigs of ram. This is because DDR3 ram allocates memory in a way that allows for 'bunch' storage.

Stop! Leaving your computer on for 2 days without restarting makes it hard to free ram. You have all these old applications till running in memory with hanging values, that are no longer required. It is not unusual to leave your computer on for so long, and still have application memory values stored in RAM that are no longer in use. This might be your reason alone.

Again, this is because you restarted your computer. You free'd up ram for your system.

If your computer is brand new, and you already fear you're infected with malware - read a networking security book sometime (not the shit tutorials implemented here by 12 year olds). I doubt its malware.

Your deppresed over your computer not allocating memory properly for you?... Okay.

I don't know if this would help, but I think you need to do the followings:
1. Open Task Manager
2. Click "Processes" tab or so
3. Find the program that is making the problem(using a lot of CPU usage)
If that don't help then go to advanced mode. Format your PC.
I am not sure 100%. If you choose to format your PC, get another hard disk, connect it to your PC, copy all files which you need and paste them to the other hard disk to evade full data loss.(Suggested for non-Recovery PCs and so)

One time I had exprecied almost same problem like yours. I opened Mozilla Firefox, I surfed the net. Then I shut it down. Suddenly my PC started lag, I opened Task Manager and I saw my CPU Usage was 2.50GB out of 3.00, I was like what the hell. I checked the processes and I saw that Mozilla Firefox is using at least 1 GB usage, as soon as I shut it down(the process), my laptop started work smoothly.

My laptop got:
3GB RAM DDR2
Intel Core 2 Duo - 2 GhZ
Intel Centrino 2 - 1 GhZ
NVidia 9600M GT
(Basic features)

I didn't knew that he had old PC :/ Whatever...

Try to use some softwares like Advanced System Optimizer for freeing up the RAM.
I use it and it does help a lot.
Don't go to format your OS because as you said that it is only a week old PC.
Just uninstall some programs that you don't need (hope u know how to do that).
Remove any SERVICES from MSCONFIG that are running for no reason (don't mess up with anything unless you know what the service is for).
Then in the Boot.ini tab in msconfig , click on Advanced button and check "numproc" and then in the drop down box select 2(or whatever number is at the bottom of the list ( i have 3).
And lastly...
Just re-check to see the startup for anything you don't need to run in the beginning of the PC

It's clean Windows 7, and no I didn't torrent it. I used warez-bb and used #. The thread about windows 7 has like over 9000 views and replies, most popular windows 7 download thread. It's very CLEAN and activated genuine, working perfectly, etc.

Although I don't think I have RAM issue anymore, because I was running load of programs, installing and downloading softwares and running modern warfare 2 on ultimate max in same time and RAM usage is on ~50%.
