It depends how paranoid you really are.. 99.99% of time it wont be a hacker in sight. However on vacation in countrys where the goverments wants to have a prying eye on things i would have some kind of VPN.
However be aware that if you traveling to a country with a crypted disk, you wont leave the country with that disk unless you open it. That happened a friend of mine, who worked in the computer business. He traveled from China to Sweden. If you refuse the government will confiscate the laptop (if that disk is crypted)
