Reputation is now 100% useless - Gooked - Jul 11, 2019
This isn't a dig at the site, but how the users are using it. Since b-rating got introduced the reputation system has been pretty much useless, the b-ratings became the system to more or less follow to see if someone can be seen as trustworthy or not whilst reputation just became vanity points (to a certain extent).
Now onto the real problem at hand, MOTM automation. The new MOTM system relies on reputation to decide the winner of each month. I've not long been back at the forum but ever since I for upgraded to L33T/UB3R, I've received +3's from members I've never interacted with before or left any reason on threads for them to updoot me. Now this wouldn't seem like such a problem if everyone realised that they're only doing it in hopes that they'll get +rep back. The reputation is a huge mess and is completely useless as of now with the current system. B-rating has left reputation pointless and should no longer be such a big factor of someones profile. Besides what you think b-rating might've done, people will still go off normal reputation points to see if someone is trustworthy or not.

Nobody cares that much about rep anymore, I think it's fine
Think MOTM should have been based over something more stable, like B-Ratings. Maybe there should be a Businessman or Vendor Of the Month Award

I mean it's not even classed as reputation anymore hence why the name is Popularity, doesn't really mean anything at all anymore. However I somewhat agree on it being based off of B-ratings as it would make a little more sense on MOTM.

I get random ones from people I never interacted with and I see them on other accounts as well. You're right about that part there is quiet a few trying to rep for rep. It doesn't equate to anything so I don't believe it's a number one priory at the moment but I can understand your view point, it does make it seem sort of useless.

It'd be a bit silly to make the MoTM a B-Rating award. If anything I think members who don't sling their shit on the market are often better members.
If popularity means something to you IRL, you need to get a reality check. If popularity means ANYTHING to you on HF, you seriously need to get a reality check. That doesn't mean you shouldn't give it out where you think it's worthy... just that you shouldn't judge someone by their "rep".

I like the idea too, but the problem is that someone will always boost their b-rating with $1 transaction

MOTM is just a fun thing for the site. Not everything has to be so serious all the time. This is not a "real" problem.

Because population is largely useless all rules regarding it were removed. It isn't a mess because it is not intended to serve any important function.

This isn't our problem. It isn't Hack Forums' job to fix stupid.
In conclusion, reputation is a thing of the past. It was replaced with population and has taken a backseat. Hack Forums evolves and older members need to realize that some things that they once considered important on the forum may no longer be so important. That's just the way it is.

Depends who you ask.
I still see people asking for + rep all the time. If it was that useless I don't see why they'd want it.
Just like thumbs up is useless on most sites, yet people engage with it.
There is some use to the feature, it's just a different use with less importance.

I completely agree, popularity is mostly only used if some wants a +rep back or a -rep for when people disagree with something someone says. or when they lose an argument.

MOTM is a title attributed to a member which was quite active and helpful over all the forum, if we base it on B ratings it would mean that only the marketplace matters in all the forum.
