use bitlocker if you want something simple
if you're afraid your storage drives will end up in governments hands, use vera crypt

Didn't use any freaky tool, just bitlocker for Windows. Works perfectly, I never was fund of adding several tools on my sys, just the less I can.

However you will need a pro version of Windows ...

Veracrypt is pretty good like Cyber Coder recommended, it's the replacement to TrueCrypt and works well.

RE: What you using for Full Disk Encryption - gogreendv - Jul 29, 2019

I think using veracrypt and truecrypt.
They are very easy to use and free.

There's so many people recommending Bitlocker but the only positive I can imagine being is it's ease of use.

Bitlocker is a Microsoft owned piece of non Open Source Software.

That should be enough for you to decide to find an alternative.

Veracrypt is Free and Open Source, you don't need Windows Pro to use it :)
Veracrypt is also easily used by Linux, Mac os and Windows
If you want to use Bitlocker on Linux or Mac you're going to have to go through various extra steps, more software etc.

As a baseline, Veracrypt is infinitely more secure, you can set your own Encryption Algorithms which is a nice feature too.

Check this out if you want to see a good Direct comparison.

Just the standard block device encryption (dm-crypt/LUKS).

vera crypt has bugs, vera crypt would leave you with blue screen, vera crypt will leave you with frozen windows after major updates, vera crypt is not compatibile with some laptop manufacturers, vera crypt is barely updated anymore,
vera crypt makes nvme ssd work on 70% less speed, vera crypt does not support hardware encryption, vera crypt is for advanced users
bitlocker with few clicks you are good to go and doesnt have any of the above issues
2-3 developers working on their free time on a huge soft vs a microsoft team working on a much less advanced soft.
so if you are not trying to hide from the government and and you're the noob type, i suggest bitlocker over vera crypt

RE: What you using for Full Disk Encryption - Lib - Jul 29, 2019

Sure, you've highlighted a lot of possible issues, None of which I've experienced myself. I've seen plenty of Bugs and faced various problems with Bitlocker.
Bitlocker Isn't available to anyone that isn't on a $230 Version of Windows. There are ways around it of course but nothing Legitimate.

I see it as a good thing that Veracrypt refuses to support Hardware Encryption the first thing you find when you search Bitlocker Hardware Encryption is an article about how It's a bad idea to let Drive manufacturers handle Encryption...
https://www.howtogeek.com/fyi/you-cant-trust-bitlocker-to-encrypt-your-ssd-on-windows-10/

'Veracrypt is for advanced users'
Encryption by default is for Advanced users, If you're going to use it, use it correctly, Cryptography has always held the basic principal of "Even if the Algorithm is known, your data will still be protected", Using Closed Source Software completely disregards this, Encryption should be Transparent, regardless of the software you use or who you're protecting your data from.

If you want to use Bitlocker, go ahead, but Veracrypt is at the top when it comes to actual security.

Why would you recommend truecrypt

RE: What you using for Full Disk Encryption - Venture - Jul 30, 2019

Veracrypt 3 wipe DoD standard

It is because it is so wonderful.
Truecrypt uses several encryption schemes and is also compatible with VeraCrypt.

RE: What you using for Full Disk Encryption - Nauhsea - Jul 30, 2019

I've personally been using VeraCrypt for a good year now. Using AES(Twofish(Serpent)) as my encryption algorithm.
