No good resource to learn Delphi ? - HoodBoyz - Aug 18, 2019

Compared to Java and C#, Delphi has much less resource to learn it, and 90% of the tutorial are from 2000 and outdated.

Is there any good tutorial with the classic Learning curve : Syntax => variable => loop => method => object ?

Thanks.

I wasn't talking about Delphi but tutorial.

I know Delphi isn't outdated as its still updated to this day.

But i think if you use Delphi 10.3 its not the same as the old delphi 7 or older.

Delphi isn't outdated by any means. It has a vibrant update rate and is fully cross-platform and everything else you would need in modern times.

As for tutorials, they aren't necessarily old, they're just scarce seeing as how it's not a big community of users (mostly enterprise and big business) so that's why you're not finding many.

90% of old tutorials still work on modern versions, very few requiring small adaptations to code.

A good place to start is the full Help Docs the IDE offers / Embarcadero's website.
Then you can try the Embarcadero webinars, they have them very frequently and are updated constantly in the form of videos, uploading to the youtube channel. Hours and hours of examples and such.

Other than that you can try board4all forum, it's a VERY big and vibrant Delphi community over there.

Lastly, read this thread: https://hackforums.net/showthread.php?tid=5724188
There is a list of books and online resources there that are current and accurate.

Finally, books are the main way to go!
You can find a list of books still relevant (regardless of their age) here: https://hackforums.net/showthread.php?tid=5733625

From that book list, I'd recommend starting and reading the following entirely, they're code is accurate for current Delphi versions:

Object Pascal Handbook - updated for Delphi 10.1 Berlin - Marco Cantu [2016]
More Coding in Delphi - Nick Hodges [2015]
Delphi Cookbook - 50 recipes to master the power of Delphi for cross-platform and mobile development on Windows, Mac OS X, Android, and iOS - Daniele Teti [2014]
Coding In Delphi - Nick Hodges [2013]
Delphi 2009 Handbook - Marco Cantu [2009]
Delphi 2010 Handbook - A Guide to the New Features of Delphi 2010 - Marco Cantu [2010]

Recipes to Master Delphi for IoT Integrations, Cross-Platform, Mobile and Server-side Development, 3rd Edition.-Packt Publishing Ltd (2018)
Paweł Głowacki - Expert Delphi - Robust and fast cross-platform
application development

That's more than you need for the current version of Delphi.

Other than that, you can always try StackOverflow if you have questions.

Good luck :)

Thanks for featuring my thread.

But OP not outdated.. just read old stuff nothing much has changed with the language itself.

Delphi is not a good technology as Visual Studio, don't waste your time on it.

Consider learning .NET, which is the modern way to program computers and os.

I hesitate between C# and delphi. I only learn for myself so Nothing commercial thats why i think i will go with Delphi :) Specially with the Community IDE

It's a great idea :)
Although yes, if you do plan to go commercially in terms of job-seeking you then need C# rather than Delphi.
Extremely few jobs on Delphi out there.

If you want commercially as a business owner then both are fine, Delphi is extremely powerful today when it comes to that.
Its cross-platform capability and speed are unrivaled by almost any other language.

Delphi is great for getting a basis into OOP programming. You won't regret learning it, in that regard.

Oh, and please, do try to read some of the books I've mentioned, they're really next level compared to anything else available :)

Good luck 🤝

RE: No good resource to learn Delphi ? - ninja30 - May 20, 2020

I had the same problem learning Delphi, it seems like no-one wants to learn it any-more.
I bet youtube has some good resources!

RE: No good resource to learn Delphi ? - Litecoin - May 23, 2020

I don't think this is necessarily true but i do notice that the scene on hackforums isn't that big... i miss omni's old website supportforums it was real boss

RE: No good resource to learn Delphi ? - tcsh - May 24, 2020

Too many skids on hf who just ride the popularity bandwagon without understanding the real differences between languages. That's why Delphi here is non-existent.
