HF Push Notifications - Xerotic - Nov 6, 2019

HF now has Push Notification support. This is a new feature and may have bugs. Read this post before making any suggestions or bug reports.

Today we added the ability for your browser to receive push notifications. This will allow you to receive notifications while you are not on HF. You have to specifically opt-in for this to work. When you visit HF you will be asked to allow notifications from the site. You must "Allow" notification to receive them via Push. Once you allow the permission you will receive push messages for your notifications while you are not browsing HF. Currently we have tested with Google Chrome, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge and they are all working well. Mobile Chrome (Android) has also been tested and works. iOS support does not exist. Apple doesn't have the feature. We will need a native app to accomplish push notifications on iOS.

Here is an example of a push notification:

(the url displayed is from our test site, knotbb.com - notification from HF will display the proper URL)

If you experience issues or are not receiving notifications (remember, you must not have an active HF window open to receive Push!) then you can "unregister" your service worker so that it updates again. Here is how to do it:
  • Right click the page while you are on HF
  • Select "Inspect Element"
  • Click the "Application" tab (On Edge there is a "Service Workers" tab and you can skip the next step)
  • Click "Service Workers" on the left hand side
  • Click the "Unregister" link
  • Click the lock icon to the left of the address bar
  • Next to "Notifications" choose the "Ask" option
  • CTRL + F5 to reload the page

At this point your browser should ask if you would like to receive notifications from HF. Click "Allow". You should now properly receive notifications.

All push notifications are based on the site notifications that can be found by clicking the bell icon on HF. You can disable specific notification types here: https://hackforums.net/notify.php

We hope to increase user engagement and keep members more alerted about what is happening on HF.

If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions I ask that you post them below.

Thank you.

Then don't enable them. Or log into your Chrome account on your browser and sign out when done so you don't receive them after that.

create a separate hidden windows user, can easily be done with group policies or reg edit if you're a home peasant.
