Try doing it subtle firstly and check out this video, it's about using drop-shadow in webdesign but it also applies to this too. I really recommend watching the whole vid and taking notes (literally).

When I make a thread design I (almost) always just copy a section from the thread so that shouldn't matter, it even makes things faster so win win.
