Shopify devs question - James Burnham - Apr 4, 2020

Shopify support says that renaming /collections to something else like /categories is not possible.

But maybe there is an option hidden in the code to do that.

I am saying this because I 've seen the official shopify support being less knowledgeable about the shopify code than some devs.

What do you think? Is it possible to change the name of /collections?

Unfortunately they're right, this can't be changed. Plenty of people have asked to do so over the years, but Shopify hasn't indicated they'll implement the feature. Rather, they take a hard stand on it not being a problem, and not a deterrence to SEO.

There are some minor work arounds, like what's listed in this article, to change how products are linked. But nothing that I've ever seen actually affects the top level collections URI. Such details wouldn't be in the frontend code that you have access to in a Shopify template either.

That is so much better! Thank you! Great tutorial, I found the solution for the debut theme in one comment.
