Shared hosting VS Managed VPS - Ombra - Apr 20, 2020 This may sound obvious but I'm searching and I'm only returned articles about the differences between shared hosting and "generic" VPS. I don't understand if there's a key difference in terms of what you can do with a VPS when it's fully managed by hosting provider, rather than using a shared (managed hosting). I mean, you have your own dedicated resources, but you aren't really free aren't you? RE: Shared hosting VS Managed VPS - Charger - Apr 20, 2020 On shared hosting, your cpanel is shared with hundreds of other people. You have a single CPU and sometimes a single HDD that is being hit constantly. Shared hosting is fine if you're not running anything resource intensive. On a VPS, you are guaranteed X ram, X cpu, and X disk space. I'm okay with this, what I cannot understand is: When purchasing a managed VPS, will you find admin panel/phpmyadmin etc. already installed and setup for you? On the other side, when purchasing a self-managed VPS you will only get VPS details and have to configure LAMP by yourself, right? Where is you do unmanaged it is up to you to do all the security and setting things up. RE: Shared hosting VS Managed VPS - Squito - Apr 21, 2020 Usually when you look at their prices they also list what is included in "managed" (what software they'll install for you, hours dedicated to your server/month, etc.). Fully managed most of the time means that you get zero access to the server (above the usual (S)FTP, phpMyAdmin, etc.). Also these servers usually cost a f**king lot (compared to unmanaged VPSes). They aren't coding or fixing bugs but if you can't get a package to install they will remote in and help. Unmanaged means they will only remote in and help if you really screw it up (mess up the network config for example). Never buy a VPS with anything pre-installed unless you're going a Docker route. Okay so in both cases I will be able to install my desired packages, but picking self-managed I'd have to care about server configuration, security and bug-fixes too. This is what I was trying to understand. I was convinced that a "managed VPS" has everything pre-installed and is exactly like shared hosting, with the difference that you pay for dedicated resources. Management is just a service you pay extra for, that grants you additional support. You'll need to check with the provider to know exactly what's included. But typically it's all maintenance and availability to set up services/configurations per your request. Unmanaged, on the other hand, leaves that all in your hands. You're free to do what you please on a managed service. It's just a layer of support that's made available to you. Personally I've never seen the value in managed VPS's. But if you're not so comfortable with basic sysadmin work, it might be worth entertaining. |
