What're some "cheap" items that are basically the same as the brand name counterpart? - dumbledore - May 18, 2020

What are some "cheap" items that are basically the same as the brand name counterpart?

for example:

Kirkland brand. The Kirkland brand is known for its quality -- in fact, they won’t put their name on a product unless independent market and product research show it meets or exceeds whatever the industry leader is. Toothbrushes, almonds, paper plates. Everything has to be better than the top-rated brand or it isn’t good enough for the Kirkland label.

If a company has what they deem to be the premium product on the market, Costco will actually ask them to make the Kirkland brand. The catch is that it has to be at least 1% better than the company product. That's not a joke. They'll identify a metric in which their Kirkland branded product has to be slightly better than your market-leading product.

As a supplier, they jump on it, because the data is clear that it jacks up sales. Usually, the supplier's product sits right next to theirs on the shelf. So the consumer has 2 choices. Yours, or yours (at a slightly worse margin).

You can be assured that the Kirkland brand is always the best, because it literally is.

This is an interesting question. I would probably say that most, but definitely not all, not-brand-name types of offerings that popular grocery stores sell are pretty similar to what one would get from a major name. For example, chocolate chips from Nestle are likely to be relatively the same as the generic one from your local grocery store.

Yeah exactly. But hmm when you mentioned chocolate chips it made me think about different types of chocolate. I think chocolate might be an exception. I think there is definitely a difference between some chocolates. Like Hershey’s chocolate vs M&M’s chocolate

I was thinking about the same things. At first I thought of colognes too but even though cheap knockoffs smell the same most of the times, they won't last that long.

Vanilla coke. I find that pretty much any brand of vanilla coke works fine for my mixed drinks.

Any OTC medicine. They all have to follow the same standards.

Most of the designer clothes. T-shirts for example, cheap Walmart cotton tee is no different from expensive Gucci or Supreme tee, they are both made out of the same material.

designer clothes, definitely. they are literally the same piece of clothing with a logo on it. there are differences in quality of clothing, though.

Highly disagree. The quality and mix of the fabrics is different for every brand.

Yeah, I was going to say this. Pretty much any medication is going to be as good as the real brand.

Same chemical compounds. Delivery method may range. Such as gel caps vs extended release and that could very well vary by brand.

Welcome to the real world where everything or most things are about product advertising to extract money from consumers

Untrue. Supreme/Yeezy Blanks are super different compared to Walmart Tees.

I find Most store brand spring water is similar to each other and kinda following your original post I find ice mountain spring water to be better then store brands.

However most store brands(Walmart’s great value vs dollar general‘S clover valley), foods at least are the exact same just in different packaging.

Very true but not totally. There are very small differences in compounds and chemicals used on these clothes which make a certain tshirt feel more soft or comfortable. I am not defending "Gucci" or anything like that, as those differences tend to be very small and usually people who point them out just have a pure placebo effect
