Can someone recommend an extremely reliable mechanical gaming keyboard for around the $120 range?

Varmilo VA87M, cherry keys of your choice. I prefer red.

What are "cherry keys"?

Cherry is a brand of switches. You really need to start doing your own research on the basics. Kind of hard to ignore cherry switches when they are on pretty much all well known mechanical keyboards.

I just looked at this keyboard, and it does look nice. Post a pic or two.

My brother says that if a mechanical keyboard doesn't have cherry switches, then it's not worth buying.

That's definitely not true.
There's brands such as Kailh switches that are pretty much on par with cherry at this point.
Don't buy a keyboard just because the switch is brand x, y, or z.

What does your keyboard need to have for the purposes of gaming/your uses? A good amount of macro keys? backlight?

These questions will better help us recommend.

I like to have a heavy, metal-framed full-size with mx-browns for my 'battlestation' (Daskeyboard 4 Ultimate) but I keep a 60% size mx blue I found on Amazon that has served me nicely. Neither of which are particularly feature rich for gaming, but then again I don't really buy my keyboards for their gaming prowess so much as comfortability for me. They're going to be around all the time whether you're gaming or not, so make sure you get something that shines just as much while you're not gaming (:
