Git ecosystem changes - thoughts? - xHeaven - Oct 2, 2020 Hey there, so long story short, the whole Git ecosystem drops the "master" term because of the "master-slave" reference. From now on, the default branch name will be "main". Big tech companies also tend to avoid the terms such as "blacklist" and "whitelist" because "blacklist" refers to bad, "whitelist" to good. The reason behind these changes as far as I know is BLM. I feel like this is going a bit too far now, even though I support this whole movement. What are your thoughts on it? Is it reasonable? src RE: Git ecosystem changes - thoughts? - Goku - Oct 2, 2020 HAHAHAHHAHAHAHA Soon the color 'black' will be renamed to 'colored' and white 'uncolored' and think it's a solution. And to be honest, I'm a 'people of color' and holy fucking shit that term is racist. I rather you call me black/brown then 'people of color'. WTF RE: Git ecosystem changes - thoughts? - Charybdis - Oct 2, 2020 I think it's ridiculous. Everything nowadays is considered offensive. RE: Git ecosystem changes - thoughts? - xHeaven - Oct 2, 2020 A friend of mine said: Quote:if you want to remove power from a word, use it often. If you want to make a word more powerful, reserve it for special use I couldn't agree more with him. RE: Git ecosystem changes - thoughts? - Exalted - Oct 2, 2020 It's bs if you ask me. Python did the same thing back in '18. It's just overkill and foolish. It's merely tech giants pandering to the affairs of today. Does it change anything, though? Not really. Neither negatively nor positively. So it is what it is. The industry as a whole is making moves like this, so it's already done. No changing it now, not that it matters. RE: Git ecosystem changes - thoughts? - X-32 - Oct 12, 2020 I hate how the world is unfolding. It's just a fucking word, leave it like it is. RE: Git ecosystem changes - thoughts? - HackingGames247 - Oct 12, 2020 What're you talking about? There is an "src" link in my first post, check it out, it explains everything. Also, if you are interested, search it up on Google: "git master slave" RE: Git ecosystem changes - thoughts? - Xerotic - Oct 12, 2020 I don't really care. It's a pedantic change that enough people in a position of control chose to adopt. Whether or not they did it for political reasons or personal morality is inconsequential as they effected their change already. This doesn't affect my work flow at all and it doesn't break anything I currently have set up. It's a minor change that I think we can all live with. The change in itself is, in my opinion, benign. Are there better ways to solve social issues? Absolutely. However, the result of minor adjustments like terminology change lead us into a position where the energy formally spent on this debate can be spent elsewhere; hopefully on more important issues. |
