Your confusing being old enough to not be called a child and the actual precieved behavior of a young adult.
Kid is a pretty specific term meaning someone who is not of age.

Nobody called him a child - Child and Kid aren't synonymous. Most people stop calling people children at 12. Teenager through to 20.
Kid is used almost always to describe someone younger in years than the person saying it if the gap in years is a decent amount (determined by the person using the word).
In most cases to someone 30 years older, you will be called a kid until you are 24. That doesn't mean they don't consider you to be a young adult or even an adult during those years.
If we really wanted to look at the informal use of describing someone as "a child or young person" - then yes. 18 is a young person aka kid.
