Thoughts on this quote from Edward Snowden? - pkdarn - Nov 23, 2020

"Arguing that you don't care about the right to privacy because you have nothing to hide is no different than saying you don't care about free speech because you have nothing to say." - Edward Snowden

Interested in hearing your thoughts.

I think Snowden is right. Privacy from government surveillance is essential. What I don't like about the EU is their GDPR is about corporations. Snowden busted the US Government for what they were doing, not corporations. When your privacy is trampled on by the government you are under tyranny.

I like snowden he is a good guy watched a few documentaries.
Good work he is done but now he is under the eye.

Obviously snowden is right. 1984 makes this pretty clear.

It's the same as if you lived in a house with your whole family with no doors, because you don't have anything to hide. Privacy is a benefit reaped even without ever needing it fully.

We should have privacy, even if you have nothing to hide, even if you have something to hide, you should be still entitled to have privacy. big brother is watching you, well wants too.

Just a quote to emphasize privacy is important. Nothing special about it.

Thinking further down this same line of thought, how else might our governments keep us safe without surveillance? Where do you draw the line between keeping citizens safe, and invasion of privacy?

Just looked up 1984 - are you referring to the book? I'll have to check it out.

I definitely agree with that analogy.

I firmly agree with this statement, in fact, it's quite important to feel this way in my opinion.

Do you agree with this quote? Again, from Edward Snowden. "When you say, 'I have nothing to hide,' you're saying, 'I don't care about this right.'"

Yeah, I broadly agree. Some people care about privacy some don't. Those that don't do not get to dictate the terms to those that do.

Quote:Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? ...It is literally translated as "Who will guard the guards themselves?"

I like this phrase, thanks for the link. Really makes you think about the bigger picture, and how sheltered we are.

Hmm, that's a pretty broad question. I'd have to think about it for a while; what do you think I would say?
