What did you regard as a privilege/luxury for those who grew up poor? - • Enlil Wolf • - Dec 3, 2020 Greetings, Denizens of HF. Hope you all are doing well. I am curious to know what things you considered or still consider as a privilege or luxury, especially if you came/come from a poor background or a middle-class working family? Regards, Wolf. I know it has no material value, but to me it is a billion times more important than any money😁 Stay healthy✌️ RE: What did you regard as a privilege/luxury for those who grew up poor? - Blanck - Dec 3, 2020 (Dec 3, 2020 03:46 AM)• Enlil Wolf • Wrote: Greetings, The freedom of not having to worry about debt, especially of the fact that my parents don't know how to manage their finances. RE: What did you regard as a privilege/luxury for those who grew up poor? - The Pact - Dec 3, 2020 I did not grow up poor or lower middle class. Probably upper middle class. But from 2008-2014 I was poor. Fabric softener is one luxury I remember the budget didn't stretch too. lol And just having a lot of tech instead of one device is nice now. I only had a home made PC in those days and no phone. And no back up laptop like I have now and cheap tablet I have now that I've stopped using because my phone is better for what I used the tablet for which is a bottom range tablet but the PC was all I had between 2008-2014. And I just have a lot of kitchen stuff that I didn't have I used to only have limited kitchen stuff. I mean even having furniture that you didn't get from Salvation Army or a yard sale or pick up off the side of the road is a real luxury. Was hard to spend time with my mom when she worked two jobs and I was still in school. Also on a less serious note hot dog buns and hamburger buns back when I was kid we just used regular bread seemed pointless to also get those 😂 RE: What did you regard as a privilege/luxury for those who grew up poor? - Ivex - Dec 3, 2020 I'm middle class by standards of the West as a whole, but working class by my country itself. And being able to go on holidays abroad was a luxury I'm grateful for. Many of my friends growing up couldn't, I was considered the rich one because my family could. RE: What did you regard as a privilege/luxury for those who grew up poor? - Ѕystem - Dec 3, 2020 I don't particularly find joy in admitting I grew up in poverty when considering how hard my single mother worked to provide for us, but I can possibly contribute to this thread with a few luxuries the impoverished usually go without. - Internet, especially high-speed - Non-generic foods(I don't mind generic anything these days, but some generic varieties of foods taste awful to their counterpart) - Groceries in general(It's worthy of being two separate examples because poverty is a fickle twat) - Attending school fieldtrips - Clothing that isn't hand-me-down - New shoes/boots - School supplies - Hot water - Heat - Air conditioning The list goes on and on and on. When you become too complacent with the luxuries and then all of a sudden there gone, really makes you appreciate everything much more. RE: What did you regard as a privilege/luxury for those who grew up poor? - The Pact - Dec 5, 2020 Didn't grow up poor but from the hard years 2008-2014 having more than a few kitchen items. Having a large bed that's not second hand. Having a large bed that's not second hand. It's interesting how a couple of people have said 2008-2014 were hard years... It's really sad that we might be headed back in that direction through massive fiscal irresponsibility. I never grew up poor but I remember 08-09 my parents definitely cut back on luxury's and extra's big time. RE: What did you regard as a privilege/luxury for those who grew up poor? - Rev - Dec 5, 2020 Damn, with as many people I know that only run the street; Simple Cell Phones is a luxury. Better yet, non-secondhand clothes. RE: What did you regard as a privilege/luxury for those who grew up poor? - Xerotic - Dec 5, 2020 For me, it was clothes. Second-hand clothes were extremely common for me growing up. Just a small thing but it's something you notice as a kid. |
