tool for properly erasing data from SSD? - SkunT3llo - Dec 9, 2020 Hello everyone, I use Kali Linux and I need wiping tool like DBAN (used for HDD) but for SSD (Crucial). Please tell me which tool to use to perform secure data erasing. Thank You in advance. 🙂 RE: tool for properly erasing data from SSD? - Yac1ne - Dec 10, 2020 (Dec 9, 2020 07:43 PM)nsundov Wrote: Hello everyone, An SSD works differently than an HDD, when you erase data from an HDD, you only erase a "pointer" to that data, that's why the deletion happens so fast regardless of its size, the data will still be there after deletion, albeit kind of lost, which is why it's possible to recover it sometimes, an SSD on the other hand has something called the TRIM command, this command makes sure the data gets wiped immediately, this is necessary because of the way the flash cells on the SSD work, and under normal circumstances, it's virtually impossible to recover data from an SSD, which is why you don't really need something like DBAN, you'll only reduce the life span of the SSD if you do something like that because they have a finite number of writes (obviously it's a big number but it's still there) RE: tool for properly erasing data from SSD? - SkunT3llo - Dec 10, 2020 (Dec 10, 2020 12:59 AM)Yac1ne Wrote: An SSD works differently than an HDD, when you erase data from an HDD, you only erase a "pointer" to that data, that's why the deletion happens so fast regardless of its size, the data will still be there after deletion, albeit kind of lost, which is why it's possible to recover it sometimes, an SSD on the other hand has something called the TRIM command, this command makes sure the data gets wiped immediately, this is necessary because of the way the flash cells on the SSD work, and under normal circumstances, it's virtually impossible to recover data from an SSD, which is why you don't really need something like DBAN, you'll only reduce the life span of the SSD if you do something like that because they have a finite number of writes (obviously it's a big number but it's still there) Thank You very much, I really appreciate your time that You spent to reply to my thread. 🙂 RE: tool for properly erasing data from SSD? - Yac1ne - Dec 10, 2020 (Dec 10, 2020 01:19 PM)nsundov Wrote: Thank You very much, I really appreciate your time that You spent to reply to my thread. 🙂 No problem buddy, you're very welcome ✌ |
